HP Officejet 5740 e-All In One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I received a notification from HP Support Assistant that said there was a Full Feature Software and Drivers update available for my HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer. I proceeded to download and install the update.

During installation, when I get to the Network Check screen, it has my device listed (HP Officejet 5740 e-All in One series printer) along with my network’s IP address. But after I select my device and click Next, I get a message that says “Unsuccessful Network Installation, the device was unable to be installed over the network.” I clicked Retry a couple of times, but the same thing happened. I just exited the installation and selected “Installation failed.” Since I can’t completely install the update I can’t use the printer.  My printer was working prior to trying to install the update.

@ers755,

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding assistance printing issues. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you make copies directly from the printer and check if it copies correctly?
  • Did you run HP print and scan doctor and check again?

For now try these steps:

Make 2  copies directly from the printer without any communication from the computer.

Check if it copies correctly. If it does, then uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers at the root level.

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, in control panel and select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.

Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2sZPr6A    and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix the issue.

  • If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: http://hp.care/2o3acvH
  • This will resolve the issue for you.
  • If the problem continues, then assign a manual IP address to the printer by following these instructions from this link: http://hp.care/2tV7I4y

  • If required. please update the printer firmware also by following instructions from this link: http://hp.care/2rHKwDD

and update the firmware from the same link mentioned above to download the HP printer drivers.

This will do the trick for you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient. Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.

If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

Hello David,

Thank you so much for your help! I followed your instructions for uninstalling the printer at the root level and then reinstalling it, and it worked. I was able to completely install the printer software and drivers, and I can use my printer again.

P.S. I did make copies before uninstalling the printer as you instructed, so that part of the printer still worked. I did not run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
