Hi Hoping someone might help with a HP Officejet Pro 8600. Since reloading the driver on a new computer I continue to get errors when attempting to print that a cartridge is damaged or defective but I have replaced the cartridges with genuine HP cartridges and the error continues. There is a firmware update that supposedly solves this but the firmware won't attach because it can't find the printer even though it is powered on and attached to the network. It looks like the firmware update may be technically associated with the Officejet Pro 8610 perhaps that it is why I can't load it.

@Jimbruynell, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding "Cartridge is Damaged or Defective" Error on HP Officejet Pro 8600!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The "cartridge is damaged or defective" error is a common issue that can arise due to several reasons including cartridge installation issues, driver compatibility, or outdated firmware. Here are some steps to resolve this issue on your HP Officejet Pro 8600:
Firmware Update
Updating your printer's firmware can help resolve compatibility issues with cartridges:
Access the Printer's Control Panel:
- From the home screen, press the "Setup" button.
- Select "Network", and then "View Network Summary" to note the printer's IP address.
Check for Updates through HP Smart or HP Website:
You can update the firmware by accessing the printer settings through the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP Software and Driver Downloads page. Search for your printer model and download any available firmware updates.
Connect the Printer to a Network:
Ensure the printer is properly connected to your network. Use the IP address obtained to access the embedded web server where you can manually search and update the firmware.
Reinstall Drivers
Uninstall Existing Drivers:
- Remove any existing HP drivers from your computer.
Download Updated Drivers:
- Download the latest drivers from the HP Software and Driver Downloads page specific to your model.
Cartridge Check
Ensure Genuine Cartridges:
- Verify that the cartridges are genuine HP cartridges as non-HP cartridges can often trigger errors.
Reset Printer:
- Turn off the printer, unplug and wait for 60 seconds, then reconnect and restart. This can sometimes reset the error message.
Reseat Cartridges:
- Remove the cartridges and ensure they are seated correctly in their respective slots.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
