HP Officejet Pro 8610

Started with cartridge problems. First they are okay and then a few minutes later, they are now damaged, etc and replacing with new ones does the same thing. (Saw forum posts for this.) However, now I'm STUCK. Powering off, waiting and back on only results with the error message "one or more cartridges appear to be damaged ..." but when the door is opened to check the cartridges, it states that "cover door must be closed in order to print" so carriage will not move.

How do I get out of this loop?

As long as it's in an error state, HP Support Assist can't detect it in order to update firmware. (which was another forum suggestion)

Hi @sheliahw,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Dealing with cartridge problems on HP Officejet Pro 8610 can be frustrating, but here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue and break out of the error loop.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 5-10 minutes to allow the printer to completely power down.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Remove and Reinstall Cartridges:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove all the ink cartridges from the printer.
  • Check for any debris or residue on the cartridge contacts and clean them gently.
  • Reinstall the cartridges securely.

Perform a Power Cycle:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Although you mentioned difficulties in updating firmware, ensure your printer has the latest firmware. Visit the official HP website and search for the latest firmware for your printer model. Follow the instructions provided to update the firmware.

Manually Move the Carriage:

  • With the printer turned off, manually move the carriage to the center.
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the error persists.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Ensure there are no obstructions in the carriage path. Check for any small pieces of paper or debris that might be causing the issue.

Factory Reset (if necessary):

  • As a last resort, you can try a factory reset. Be aware that this will reset all settings to their default values. Refer to your printer's manual or HP's support documentation for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Sorry for my delay in answering, we had to get another printer cord.
If the door is open, the cartridges will not move. How do I manually get the cartridges move to the center so I can remove and check them?

Hi  @sheliahw ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

HP Officejet Pro 8610 and the cartridges are stuck or inaccessible due to a door open error, you can try the following steps to manually move the cartridges to the center:

Turn Off the Printer:

  • Make sure the printer is turned off to avoid any potential damage.

Manually Move the Cartridges:

  • Open the printer cover as you normally would when replacing cartridges.
  • Gently move the print carriage manually to the center. You can usually do this by pushing it gently with your hand. Be careful not to force it.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Inspect the printer for any obstructions that may be preventing the cartridges or print carriage from moving freely. This could include paper jams, bits of paper, or foreign objects.

Turn On the Printer:

  • Once you have ensured that the cartridges are in the center and there are no obstructions, turn on the printer.

Check for Error Messages:

  • Look at the printer display or on your computer for any error messages. If there are specific error messages related to the cartridges, take note of them.

Inspect Cartridges:

  • With the cartridges accessible, remove and inspect them for any obvious issues. Check for tape or packaging that might not have been removed, and make sure the cartridges are properly seated.

Reset the Printer:

  • If the problem persists, you might want to try resetting the printer. Turn it off, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware updates installed. Visit the HP support website and search for your printer model to find and install any available updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

The cartridge being moved gently to the center is the problem. It will not move even when I push more forcibly.
