Hi there, I am working with a user and during printing she gets this popup on the printer screen telling her to plug a usb storage device into the ptinter. She is not attempoting nor does she want to be able to print from a usb storage device.

Printing is normal for a few minutes then she sends a job and realizes it has not printed. Looks in the queue and sees jobs pending. Unable to cancel jobs. Looks at printer and the screen message says (USB storage device to the USB port) touches ok to make the message go away.

Cancel job from queue fails. Must restart the computer to continue printing.

printer: HP Officejet Pro 8730

comuter Lenovo t440 thinkpad notebook

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Greenturtle, Thank you for your reply and suggestion about the firmware. This guide requires that the printer is on a network.  In my envirnment personal printers are not allowed on the corporate network for serity reasons.  I will search for an alternative way to upgrade the firmware.

Hi @blang44

Spoiler
This guide requires that the printer is on a network.

As per installation instructions fom the web, you can use USB:

Before starting the upgrade:
• The HP Officejet Pro 8730_8740 Firmware flashing (upgrade) requires a wired network or a USB connection.
• DO NOT upgrade the printer firmware in a wirelessly connected printer.
• If the computer has a firewall installed or enabled, it may block the Firmware Download Utility from accessing the printer. Therefore, please remember to temporarily disable any firewall that may be on the computer, including firewalls such as Microsoft Windows XP Firewall, Sygate, Zone Alarm or BlackICE

Install instructions:
1. Switch on the HP Officejet Pro 8730_8740 printer and wait until the printer is READY. [The Power light should be on]
2. Double click OJ8730_8740_R1726D.exe to launch the HP Printer Update utility. A list of HP Officejet Pro 8730-8740 All-in-One Printers detected will be displayed on the screen.

Note: If the Wired network printer you wish to upgrade is not displayed in the detected printer list, click on the Refresh button to scan for printers connected via the wired network.

3. Click on the checkboxes on the left to select single or multiple HP Officejet Pro 8730-8740 printers you wish to upgrade.
4. Click on the Update button to start the firmware flashing process.
5. Message showing "The selected printer has been updated successfully" will be shown. Firmware flashing will begin.

CAUTION! Do not interrupt the printer during the upgrade process. Printer maybe damaged if power is interrupted during the firmware upgrade process.

6. When the printer has successfully completed the flashing process, it will automatically print out a Self Test Diagnostic Page, that will show the new firmware version.
7. Click on the Done button to close the HP Printer Update utility.

Hope that helps!
