HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

This printer is not working - I have a white screen on the printer and when I try to print, I get an error message stating that the printer is busy. I have tried resetting the printer, have confirmed that all updates are completed for both the printer and the computer. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer but the screen stays white and I am unable to print (occasionally after a reset of the printer I am able to get a partial page to print, but the majority of the page will just print random colors, not the page that was sent to the printer) This printer is only a little over a year old and I should not be having these issues, as the printer is stationary on a desk and has been for the entire time I have owned it. and this issue started appx a month ago. I have HP instant ink so I am having to pay each and every month for a service that I really am not able to use.

Hi @GarbagePrinter4,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is experiencing a hardware issue, particularly with the white screen and inconsistent printing. Given that you've already tried many troubleshooting steps, here are a few additional suggestions.

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on.
  • This can sometimes help reset the internal components.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure that your printer firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes, issues can be resolved with a firmware update.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Try performing a hard reset by pressing and holding the power button for about 20 seconds.

Inspect Ink Cartridges:

  • Remove the ink cartridges and check for any obstructions or issues with the cartridge contacts. Reinstall the cartridges and ensure they are securely in place.

Printer Diagnostics:

  • Access the printer's built-in diagnostics if available. You might find it under the settings or tools menu.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
