Hi, my printer is an Officejet x576 dw which freezes each time I switch it on. For a few seconds, the control panel is active and I can navigate through it but once the initial warmup steps over, the control panel freezes and I cannot action anything from the printer. I tried the HP diagnostic which returns that everything is fine with the printer. I also tried to a factury reset, through the printer control making use of the few seconds when it is active during the inital warm up phase, but I received the message that the reset to factory settings cannot be done since there are other works in progress ... but I can't see what these are. I tried to force the reset of the factory settings through the HP Smart application on my laptop connected by USB to the printer but no luck either. Can someone pls help ?

Hi @EF74,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand your HP Officejet Pro X576dw control panel freezes after startup. Let’s go through a few checks.

1. Perform a Hard Power Reset

This clears temporary errors in the printer's memory.

  • While the printer is on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 2–3 minutes.
  • Press and hold the power button on the printer for 30 seconds to drain any remaining charge.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet (HP recommends connecting directly to a wall outlet, not a surge protector).
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.

2. Remove Ink Cartridges and Trays

The printer may be freezing while attempting to check the ink system or paper path.

  • Turn the printer off.
  • Remove all ink cartridges.
  • Remove the paper tray.
  • Turn the printer on with the cartridges and trays removed.
  • If the printer boots to a "Missing Ink" error without freezing, the issue is likely a faulty cartridge or an ink system error (like 0x610000D3).
  • Insert the cartridges one by one to identify if a specific cartridge causes the freeze.

3. Force Firmware Update via USB

If the firmware is corrupted, the printer will freeze. You need to update it while it is connected via USB to a computer, even if the screen is frozen.

  • Download the latest firmware for the x576dw from the HP support website onto your computer.
  • Connect the printer to the computer via USB cable.
  • Run the firmware update tool. If the tool detects the printer, follow the prompts to re-flash the firmware, even if it says the same version is installed.

4. Perform a "System Configuration" Reset

If you can get to the menu during the few seconds of functionality:

  • Go to Setup > Tools > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • If this fails due to "works in progress," it usually means a print job is stuck in the memory.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

hi thanks for sharing these instructions. I'll try these by end of day and will revert back if any luck.

Can you clarify which of the following programs that I downloaded from HP site in a zip file is the firmware udpate tool? and if not any of these, can you share the link to the right executable?

thanks

Hi @EF74,

Thank you for getting back.

Important Clarification About What You Downloaded

The folders shown (like driver deployment utility, prncon, and Active Directory template) are driver/admin tools, not firmware. These are used for IT deployment, not for fixing a frozen control panel.

The firmware update tool is not inside this ZIP, that’s why you’re not seeing any obvious “.exe” for firmware.

You need a separate firmware package.

Download the Correct Firmware Tool

  1. Go to the HP Support website.
  2. Search for: HP OfficeJet Pro X576dw firmware.
  3. Look specifically for a file named similarly to the following:
    • Firmware Update Utility
    • OJX576_Firmware_Update.exe
  4. Download the .exe file (not ZIP tools package).
  5. Save it to your computer.

Run Firmware Update via USB (Critical Step)

  1. Connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable.
  2. Turn the printer ON (even if frozen).
  3. Run the downloaded firmware .exe file.
  4. Wait for it to detect the printer.
  5. Proceed with the update, even if the same version is shown.

If Printer Is Not Detected

  1. Try a different USB port.
  2. Use a direct connection (no hub).
  3. Restart the computer once.
  4. Run the firmware tool again.
  5. Keep the printer powered on during detection.

Why This Matters

Your symptom (works briefly > freezes) strongly points to firmware corruption or stuck internal process

The ZIP you downloaded is deployment tools. The firmware .exe is what actually fixes this issue
If the firmware tool successfully detects the printer and reflashes it, this usually resolves control panel freezing caused by stuck jobs or corrupted firmware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

hi - thanks for the pointer, however there is currently no firmware available on HP Support site for my x576dw printer. the search returns nothing.

I finally downloaded a HP firmware found on a 3rd party site : OJPX576DW_CN1502BR.exe, but when it runs, my printer is greyed out and the status is listed as "Not-applicable and I cannot push the firmware update any further.

when digging further, I came across an old thread with a similar issue:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/x576dw-firmware-wont-upgrade/td-p/61723...  where HP support could help and provide an old firmware to install on a flash drive.  Can you provide similar information pls?

Hi @EF74,

Thanks for your response and Thank you for sharing those details  I completely understand how  it must be to try multiple downloads and still see your printer greyed out in the update tool.

You’ve done all the right troubleshooting steps so far, and I want to acknowledge the effort you’ve already put in.

I’ve checked the HP Support website for the OfficeJet Pro X576dw, and the latest available package is the HP OfficeJet Pro X576dw MFP Full Software Solution (Recommended).

  • Version: 32.4.119_1
  • Size: 130.4 MB
  • Release Date: May 19, 2022

You can download it directly here:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL46980/ij-113775-4/Full_Webpack-119_1-OJX576_DW_Full_Web...

This package includes the full driver and software suite, which is the most up-to-date release currently available. While it’s not a standalone firmware update utility, installing this recommended solution ensures your printer has the latest supported drivers and management tools.

If your control panel freeze persists after installing this package, I’d suggest contacting HP Service Centre.

I hope this helps.
