No, It does not show that the printer is offline. I do NOT have to assign a static IP Address to it. That is NOT my problem.

When I check the printer, it says "Needs Attention."

I have to go upstairs every time and turn it back on and then it will print until later on in the day. Turning it back on is all I have to do. I don't have to do any software gymnastics. It just needs someone to push the on button and everything is fine.

So I got the IP address for the printer and I typed it into my browser and I searched for the settings. "Auto off after "is set to NEVER.

Of course I have the latest drivers. I checked both on my computer and for Windows updates. If HP has a better driver then they have not told Microsoft about it.

Is there a way to tape the on button down? I am considering opening the case and soldering the connections together.

 Hi @Dan_Flak,

I'd like to help!

I'd like to help with the printer connectivity issue.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor to check connectivity

Download a special version of HP Print and Scan Doctor specifically created to help with printer offline conditions.

  1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.
  3. Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.
    • If your printer in not in the list, turn it off and on, and then click Retry.
    • If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  4. If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.
  5. If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.

Set a manual IP-

To set a manual IP and try the steps below -

1.Open the printer driver and then click the Properties or Preferences button.

2. Click the Services tab, and then, in the Print Information Pages drop-down list, click the Config Page list item.

3. Click the Print button.

--->Open a web browser (ex Chrome or Mozilla) and type in the printer's IP

--->then go to network ---> general ---> network protocols ---> select IPV4 only-->apply

--->go to wireless ---> wireless 802.11---> select manual ip ---> apply

--->Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.

--->then go to settings on the main ews page --> power management ---> select sleep mode to max 15min

Connect the printer to TCP/IP port

a. Click Start/Devices and Printers.  Right-click on your HP Printer.  Select Printer Properties.  Select the Ports tab at the top.

b.    Select Add Port.  Select Standard TCP/IP Port.  Select New Port.

c.    Follow the Add Port Wizard.  Under Printer Name or IP Address, .  Example:  192.168.1.15.  The IP address will be copied under Port Name.

d.    Select Next and Finish the Wizard.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for responding.

I've used the HP doctor application in the past. It did not fix the problem

Assigning a fixed IP address can fix a chronic issue with the printer being OFFLINE.

This is not the issue I am experiencing. I don't have an issue with the printer being offline. I have an issue with the printer turning itself off. When I turn the printer back on all devices see it and can use it until it turns itself off again.

What does "Attention Required" mean? It's more obscure than Microsoft error messages.

Do I have to pet it or feed it or water it?

HP Recommended

I'd recommend you perform a power reset for attention required error.

Let's try a power reset on the printer

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

The issue you're facing is caused by sleep mode and the WSD post connection to the printer, please try the suggested steps above.

Keep me posted with the results!
