HP PhotoSmart 8180 All-in-One
macOS 10.12 Sierra

Hello,

I recently had to erase my MAC hard drive and reinstall MAC OS Sierra (10.12).  When I try to use the printer driver provided I get a "Filter Failed" message when I try to print.  How do I fix this problem?

Thank you!

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Photosmart C8180 All-in-One Printer. I read that after installing Mac OS Sierra, you are unable to the printer as there is a message stating "Filter Failed" message. Not worry, I'll do my best to help you.

I did some digging on this case and found that there are no printer drivers for Mac OS Sierra and therefore this could be happening. However, there is a workaround to install the basic drivers that should make the printer work. Please follow the below steps:

  • Please download the Mac inbuilt drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2flF56z.
  • From System Preferences, click on Print & Scan.
  • Click the Plus sign.
  • Select the listed Photosmart C8100 series (This printer's drivers should work).
  • Click the drop-down menu next to Use or Print Using and click on Select Printer Software.
  • Select the Photosmart C8100 series from the list.
  • Click OK to confirm your selection and add the printer, then try printing using the configured print queue.

You may try to print and that should work. For scanning, you may try to use the Apple Image Capture.

I hope this helps. Keep me posted. Cheers! 🙂
