HP Photosmart 7520 [7525]
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Photosmart 7520 (7525) via wireless home router, no firewalls.  Signal strength is literally 100%.  Comm is not the issue.

- - - -

Win/10 PRO [totally up-to-date].

- - - -

For many months, I have been able to print/scan etc. via the HP Printer Assistant, even after upgrading months ago to latest WIN/1O PRO.

- - - -

Regardless of the issues herein, I can print to the HP 7525.

- - - -

Twice, once today and once two weeks ago, I am not able to use the “Printer Assistant” as it does not launch/run, even if I try to run in administrative mode.   And, I even tried "compatability" mode to no avail.

- - - - -

Yes, there was a WI/10 upgrade yesterday: 2017-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4025342)

= = = = = =

  1. Have uninstalled and reinstalled the HP drivers multiple times – no luck.  I used both MS uninstalelr and REVO uninstaller.
  2. Have forced the PC to use the MS drivers – no luck
  3. Have deleted “all” HP folders between the last two uninstall/reinstall cycles.
  4. Entered Print Management and deleted all the related entries there as well.
  5. Cleared the registry with CCleaner.
  6. Upgraded the printer/scanner firmware.
  7. Ran HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.0.004 multiple times between “installs. It shows that “scan” is OK.  It then opens the “SCAN Control” window, (not the Printer Assistant), and allows me to scan and save the scanned document.
  8. BUT, when I quit “Scan Doctor”, the Printer Assistant still will not launch.
  9. By the way “Scan Doctor” fixed my issue two weeks ago, so I was surprised it did not perform an effective repair this time.

WORK AROUND = I found this:  HP Scan Extended

          ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

HP Scan Extended appears a bit un-pretty, but looks better than the webpage below.  And it works, as I was able to scan from my HP7525 to my PC..  I have a shortcut to invoke the app now.

= = = = = = =

HP’s IP based webpage via http://192.xxx.x.xxx/#hId-networkSumPage, allows me to “scan” but does not allow me to save the scanned document to my PC [I don’t have time to diagnose this webpage issue].  And by the way the webpage is really primitive.  Yes, I can see my HP7525’s ink levels, etc.

= = = = = = =

AND, I have no issues activating the “Printer Assistant" on my Windows 10 HOME laptop, which has all the latest updates as well, including yesterday’s MS updates.

My conclusion is that this anomaly is a WIN/10 PRO issue.

Unfortunately, it is what it is.

Perhaps a "registry repair" via MS Windows trouble shooter might uncover and correct an anamoly inhibiting the proper execution.

As I did "nothing" as well, I have no other clue or path to follow.

In  my case, my issue was self healing, regardless of the numerous HP suggestions.

Hence, I'm closing this thread from my perspective.

Another test and outcome =  nil change.

As I have two PC’s (laptop & desktop), I copied the “HP Photosmart 7520 series.exe” from my laptop to my desktop, after renaming the existing file on my desktop.

After adding it to the “Program Files\HP\HP Photosmart 7520 series\Bin” directory, I clicked on the copied application.

Nope, the Printer Assistant pop-up window did not open.  Clicked several more times, all to no avail.

So, I figured, let me delete the “copied” program and revert to the original on the desktop.

Now Windows Explorer tells me that it cannot delete the “copied” program because it is in use.  But, as noted, there was no pop-up of the Printer Assistant window panel.

Eventually, I deleted the copied program and un-renamed the original of the program.

Bottom line, the application still does not work on my desktop = Windows 10 / PRO

Hello, @Ted_T_NJ – Hope you are well 🙂

May the Forums be with you!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel!

Going through your post, I see that you are having issues while using the HP Support Assistant. You have covered all the relevant steps to troubleshoot this issue 🙂

I’d suggest using the HP Smart. Go to https://www.hpsmart.com/us/en to download and install the HP Smart app on your PC.

Also, try the steps listed here to try and fix the issue: http://hp.care/2tbTkq6

Follow the steps under "Step 2: Install the software patch manually" - Windows 8.

Let me know if that helps!

Good luck 🙂

Thanks for the feedback:

Windows 8 patch suggested above did not work (could not invoke "HP Photosmart 7520 series.exe").

So, I reverted to my "create restore" prior to any changes.

Yes, I always do create restore points before modifications to my systems.

= = = =

  1. And, I uninstalled the Photosmart drivers using REVO Uninstaller.
  2. Next, I scanned my registry and deleted every instance of Photosmart in the registry.
  3. Yes, dangerous, but I was game, as I had a "restore point"
  4. Finally,  I reinstalled the Photosmart drivers.
  5. As we used to say in the Navy when we  searched for a submarine, but could not locate the sub:  "NO JOY"
  6. Yes, very frustrating.

= = = =

Yes, the other recommended work around does work, e.g.: HP SCAN EXTENDED.

= = = =

Nonetheless, I am disappointed that the HP software and Windows 10 PRO do not cohabitate properly.

Hello @Ted_T_NJ, I am the @Chimney_83. It looks like you were interacting with @ Dvortex, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps. Recommend you run HP Support Assistant on a regular basis to be notified when a new update for Windows 10 is released.

You can try the new version when released and check if it resolves the issue you are facing.

Please do post your technical queries on our Forums for assistance.

Thank you for your feedback.

Today, as I did on other occasions, I ran "HP Support Assistant".

It found no updates or messages.

= = = = =2017-07 7525 driver error with HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.0.2 _.JPG

Then I ran Print and Scan Doctor 5.0.2 and it reports a driver error.

As I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver numerous times, as reported herein, I will take  a "time out' and see what develops over the next two weekks, as I've grown weary  of chasing "fireflies" or more precisely doing an Easter Egg hunt to no avail.

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps.

Request you follow the procedure mentioned below to uninstall the printer software and settings completely and install it back on your computer and check.

The procedure might look complicated but will resolve the issue you are facing.

Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)

Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)

Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.

Click on print server properties.

You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there, if any.

Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.

Restart the PC.

Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,

Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.

It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files, ignore them).

If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.

Restart the PC again.

Download the latest full feature driver from www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer.

Connect/power on the printer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

Let me know if this helped.

Not to be obtuse, but I have performed the steps as you recommend multiple times, all to no avail.  (Please see above narratives from me.)

I can SCAN using "HP Scan Extended" , but I cannot activate HP's Printer Assistant [HP Photosmart 7520 series.exe], that is the hurdle.  The driver works, the support support will NOT run.

I have exhausted my my avaialble cycles and I'm taking a two week hiatus.

Hello, @Ted_T_NJ

Thanks for the update!

this could be an issue with the driver package compatibility with your Windows 10 environment. You can try using a different driver package as suggested below:

1) Uninstall all the driver entries and then delete the printer registry entries as well.

2) Now, check the services listed below:

  • Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.
  • Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.
  • Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.
  • Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.
  • Click on http://hp.care/2qGAqWh to download and install the "basic driver software" package.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂

OK, thanks for a “new” approach.  Results are below.

= = = = =

Uninstall all the driver entries and then delete the printer registry entries as well.  [DONE]

= = = = =

  • Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window. [OK]

= = = = =

  • Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.  {No change required}

= = = = =

  • Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service. [No change required = running & manual]

= = = = =

  • Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well. [No change required = running & manual]

= = = = =

  • Click on http://hp.care/2qGAqWh to download and install the "basic driver software" package.  [PS7520_Basicx64_1315.exe]

= = = = =

There is no “real” change after I performed the above steps, the HP application “HP Photosmart 7520 series.exe” still refuses to run/activate.  This is path:

"C:\Program Files\HP\HP Photosmart 7520 series\Bin\HP Photosmart 7520 series.exe" -Start UDCDevicePage

= = = = =

So next I run: "C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Scan Extended\bin\" and now I am presented with five options,  See JPG = HP 7525 anomalies - 01.JPG   I need to select #5

= = = =

Every time, I uninstall and reinstall the driver, the NET # increases by 1.

And, I cannot fathom how to delete/remove all the other unusable values.

= = = = =

Now I try "C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Photosmart 7520 series\bin\HPScan.exe" and I am again presented with several  (fewer) options, see: HP 7525 anomalies - 02.JPG

This opens to:

The basic scan page, see: HP 7525 anomalies - 03.JPG

= = = = =

Yes, I can fax, but I don’t see where I can change any FAX settings other than color/black & white, normal or fine.
