We have three computers all running Windows 10. One is a brand new laptop. All worked with our two HP Photosmart 8150's connected by wire through July. One by one they showed "Offline" After correcting this, we got "Printer in error state" like you did. I have been unsuccessful after going through every available or suggested diagnostic. The printers will print from an internal print test page command, but not from the computer. When the new lap top was connected, it found the printer and indicated it was setting it up. Proves printer and connection are not the problem. Still the error message. HP site shows 8100 series supported by Windows 10. Geek Squad called in. Unable to correct on line and left a bunch of problems. Local Geek squad corrected computer mess, but still could not print. Geek told by girlfriend that of course it isn't supported, we have 8150's and only 8100's are supported (series designation ignored). That's what people tell women when they want them to go away. Immediate solution is to buy new printers. Also hooking up existing printers to outdated computers still running earlier Windows versions 7 and XP. Some success, but windows doesn't support those versions so may have similar problems. Planned obsolesce will not get us to buy HP printers. Anyone need cartridges?

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
Thank you

I FOUND THE SOLUTION:
In Device Manager, open up Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Find the 8100 Series device
Click on Update Driver
Browse my computer for driver software
Let me pick from a list
Choose USB Composite Device
