HP Photosmart 6520
Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite

My HP Photosmart 6520 has been dropping the wireless connection every time I go to print wirelessly.  In trying to figure out what was wrong, I determined that it is not connecting to a server at all.  So I followed the instructions on troubleshooting.  It told me to delete the printer off of my computer and reinstall it. I do have a wireless connection on the printer and it is connected to my router.  It seems that the computer does not "see" the printer. Now that it is deleted, it refuses to reinstall. Can someone please help me figure out why it won't reinstall the printer and won't connect?!?!?!

Hi @TiffanyL2017,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues connecting your HP Photosmart printer to your iMac. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

I would suggest performing a network power drain and the reconnecting the printer to the network. Here are the steps to perform a network power drain:

·         Turn off all the devices connected on your network including the PC, Smartphones, printer, modem (if present) and router. Make sure all the devices in the network are turned off / unplugged.

·         Wait for 2-3 minutes.

·         Now turn on the modem if present. Wait till all the lights are steady and idle.

·         Then turn on the router. Again wait for a couple of minutes so that the lights are all steady.

·         Then turn on the printer and other devices.

Now, perform the steps below to try and reconnect your printer to the network. The Wireless Setup Wizard provides an easy way to set up and manage the wireless connection to your printer.

  1. Turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.

  2. On the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon .

    The Wireless Summary screen appears.

  3. Touch Settings, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.

  4. Follow the instructions on the control panel to connect the printer to your wireless network.

Now try to perform Reset Printing system on Mac:

  • Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
  • Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
  • Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
  • Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
  • Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
  • Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
  • Now click on the link: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Applications/HP_Easy_Start.app.zip to download and install the printer driver.
  • In the "Add printer" Window make sure you add the printer as mentioned below.
  • Click the “Add button” (+).
  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
  • Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (Select the name of your HP printer).

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

This did not fix this issue.  As soon as I tried to set the printer up it dropped from the network.

I was finally able to get it to set up to print, although it still drops the network every time the screen on the printer shuts off.  However, it is not able to scan to email at all...Is there something else I need to set up?

Hi @TiffanyL2017,

As I understand you are able to print however, having issues while scanning to email. Don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resolve this issue.

Let's start by assigning a public DNS address to your printer. Here are the steps:

•    Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
•    Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
•    Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
•    Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
•    Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
•    Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Restart the router and the printer once done and then try the scan to email again.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you setup the scan to email profile via printer control panel as suggested below. Try the steps below:

  1. On the printer control panel, touch Scan ().

  2. Scroll to Email, and then touch Email. When the Welcome screen displays, touch Continue.

  3. Touch the Email field to open the on-screen keyboard, type the email address that you want to use with the profile, and then touchContinue. An email with the security PIN is sent to the email address.

  4. Retrieve the email with the security PIN from the email address.

  5. Touch the PIN field to open the on-screen keyboard, and then type the security PIN.

  6. If you do not want the printer to remember the email address, touch the checkbox next to Remember Me (optional).

  7. Touch Log In. If you left the Remember Me checkbox marked in the previous step, the printer prompts you to choose Store Email or Auto Log In, depending on how you want the printer to store the email profile.

  8. Select the scan type:

    • Touch Photo, touch the display to select your scan settings, and then continue to the next step.

    • Touch Document, and then continue to the next step.

  9. Review the email profile information, and then touch Continue.

  10. When the scan finishes, touch Yes if you want to send another scan to email or No if you do not.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.
