Doing "Check for Updates" hangs with "Retry" on HP - Printer - 20.80.3.8529
It flashes the above update name then hangs with "retry." I've retried a dozen times. I "uninstalled" the printer in Device Manager and did not help. I'm stuck on getting any new Win 10 updates.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Which Officejet Printer do you have? Are you getting this message on installing a firmware update? Where do you see this error?
Let us know 🙂
Thanks!

I have the same issue and it occurs a during a windows update. I am running Windows 10 Home Insider Preview Evaluation copy. Build 21313.rs_prerelease.210209-1440. But this hp printer update has been occuring for the last several builds. It is just now that it has been completely hanging up all other updates after it downloads and gets through 100% of the install then says the install failed and the retry button shows up but the other updates stop installing and just sits there. If I click the retry button the same thing occurs again in the same manner. If I can stop that one from downloading and trying to install before the other updates maybe it would work. But I'm about to uninstall all hp printer software from my system and any references in the registry. And try again .

I solved my printer issue. First, I searched for what that particular update was for and found it was for a 6000 series printer that I do not have. However, a few years back I connect to one that a friend of mine had. Even though I had uninstalled the software a while back, Windows registry keeps track of all installations. Unfortunately, uninstalling the software for the printer (or anything else) does not get rid of the entries or key values. So, I uninstalled all of my HP printer software and then opened regedit as administrator. I started at the very top and searched for a term that would hit on HP printers but not anything else that is HP ( like my laptop itself). Carefully, moving from one instance to the next using F3 I finally found a reference to that printer. Using a term associated with that entry, I was able to find and delete all key values and some entries specific to that printer and only that printer. Deleting the wrong thing in the registry can kill your operating system or worse, turning it into a brick or doorstop. Deleting anything in the registry cannot be undeleted and it has immediate effects. It took quite a while to carefully find every reference to that or any other HP printers that are not the same model as mine. But in the end, I closed the registry editor and rebooted my system. It came back up fine. Then I did a windows update. After that finished, I went on the HP website and downloaded the software for my printer and installed it. Everything works fine. I still don't have OCR available but I can't say for sure if my printer is capable of performing character recognition. That will have to wait. But to all of you still having this issue, this is what will fix the problem.
