HP Smart App on my mac is asking me to sign in to begin my scan. 

I've been using it for some time now and this is the first time (probably since I first had to do it) that its asking me to do this. When I click "sign in" it seems to glitch and won't let me continue. I eventually saw a screen that asked me to sign in to my hp account using the open browser window, presumably leading to hp.com, but there's no open page. Worse, it seemed to make clicking to different open windows very difficult to impossible. I've had to close down my computer and restart. Did that multiple times. Independently, I signed in to hp.com without clicking the app. I can't seem to use this Scan feature anymore and that's a shame. Anyone have any idea how to help me?
