Yes, as I told you before, this model printer is not compatible with the HP Smart app due to its age, and using built-in drivers will only let you print but not scan.

 

As you are not able to install the full-feature driver that can be used to scan, the last resort would be to try the HP Scan Extended app to scan and check if that helps.

Click here to download the app. 

 

If the issue persists, there is no other option to scan.

Thanks for your effort but:  Loaded HP Ext; switched printer on; Ran HP Ext from program list.'Imaging device not found'; rebooted; ran again; same result. printed test text ok; ran again; same result. Looks like I'm snookered!

That's unfortunate. There is no other option to scan. You will have to upgrade the printer or use it just for printing purposes. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.
