I have a several-year-old HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer and it's electronically constipated (won't print documents in the queue).  In the past, I've opened the HP Smart App, but now that isn't working.  The Windows App store is not updating it properly, and even when I try downloading a copy from the HP website, it still goes back to the Windows App store and gives an error message.

I tried reaching customer service at HP to tell someone about the problem, but my device, which is listed on my HP account, is listed as "expired."  When I click "see details," it dumps me into a new part of the website and doesn't tell me what that means.  Has HP basically abandoned its printer?  Is it saying "dude, you paid for that 5 or 7 years ago and now you have to pony up more cash for a new printer, 'cause that one is dead as a doornail and we won't support it," or what?

Frankly, this whole thing shows a certain level of contempt for the customer, something that I think is becoming more and more endemic in American companies nowadays.  They've gone so far down the route of trying to shift customer service costs onto the consumer that the entire system feels like a big middle finger to the buyer.  If I can't resolve this, I'll lose a bundle on HP ink, but I think I'll also try not to buy another HP printer again, since they really seem to despise their customers.

Hi @BDWAM,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel the frustration and disappointment in your words, and you’re absolutely right to expect your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, a reliable workhorse for years, to continue serving you without unnecessary hurdles.

Let me address your concerns and offer a path forward.

What’s Happening with HP Smart & Your Printer

HP has recently transitioned from the HP Smart app to a newer platform called the HP App, which replaces HP Smart entirely. Unfortunately, this shift has caused compatibility issues for older printers like the OfficeJet Pro 8600, especially when trying to print from Windows or update the app via the Microsoft Store.

Additionally, HP has marked many older devices as “expired”, meaning they are no longer under warranty or actively supported with new drivers or app updates. This doesn’t mean your printer is useless; it just means HP is focusing support on newer models.

Here’s What You Can Do Right Now
1. Clear the Print Queue

If your printer is electronically “constipated,” try this: 👉 Fix Print Jobs Stuck in Queue – HP Guide

2. Use the HP App Instead of HP Smart

HP Smart is no longer supported for many older printers. Try installing the HP App, which replaces HP Smart: 👉 HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site

If the Windows Store is giving errors, try:

  • Running wsreset.exe to clear the Windows Store cache.
  • Ensuring Windows is fully updated.
  • Downloading from 123.hp.com directly.

👉 Unable to download and install the HP app | HP® Support

3. Try HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

This tool can help resolve stuck queues, offline issues, and driver mismatches: 👉 Use Diagnose & Fix in the HP app to repair common printing issues (Windows, macOS) | HP® Support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
