HP Smart Tank 7301
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just installed my HP Smart Jet printer and all is well.

Quick question:

Is there any photo editing software in the "HP Smart" app?

When on Windows, when I click on "Print Photos" I just get a list of photos to print from my computer.   If that's all that's supposed to happen,  It's fine.  I just thought there was some basic editing tools in the Smart app. Just wondering.

THANKS!

Welcome to the HP Community.

There are actually a couple of ways to do this...

One is to use a software / application that actually includes photo editing support.  I've provided information for the software that I have used later in this message.

HP Smart Windows app provides a bit of editing capability.

To get to the photo image editing tools,

Open HP Smart

Select to Scan Photos > then Import your saved photo into the application

Once the photo is imported into the application,

Select to Edit the image - there are a few options available, including Crop / Color / Adding text / Filters.

Partial Examples...

HP_Smart_W10_Scan_Edit_Image_Set_7HP_Smart_W10_Scan_Edit_Image_Set_7

==================================================================================

What else?

Install either the HP Smart Application first OR install the printer software first.

No wrong way - be sure to install both to have "full coverage" and access to your printer features.

The full driver printer software supports printing and scanning for Office documents, PDF, Photos (Images), and other print or scan software.

>>> Check / Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software

The full driver provides the foundation on which other programs and printing software depend.

Preparation - Install Full Driver Printer Software

If you have not done so,

In addition to the HP Smart application,

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.

HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.

Printer Software Check

Notes

If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

The installation of the printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.

The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools

HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.

Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_4Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_4

Next...

Printer software not installed - OR - (still) installed but not working?

NOTE:  If the printer software shows installed but is not working as expected,

Uninstall the printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

What if?

If software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and is “still hanging around” after you uninstall / Restart...

Microsoft:  Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

OR

Revo Uninstaller (Free version)

then

Restart the computer and log in

Reminder:  If using USB, disconnect the USB printer cable between the printer and the computer before installing software.  (Re)Connect the USB cable when instructed to do so near the end of the installation procedure.

Install a fresh copy of the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Restart the computer and log in

Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • When asked, Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
  2. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
  3. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
  4. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
  5. If the installation completes and then wants to loop around again, X out of the repeat menu / message to install again.
  6. Full driver includes print and scan functions supported by your printer and provides the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.

What about Printing editing software?

Lots available, include the most well known (Photoshop and similar).

I've used the following and have it installed on my systems...

Irfanview > Brilliant Free Photo Viewing, Editing, and Print Software

Irfanview provides an exceptional software experience that can be used for a variety of scan and print tasks, including the “Mirror” or horizontal flip function plus several other options not found elsewhere.

  • Create a Restore Point (optional, recommended)
  • Download the appropriate version (32bit or 64bit) of the program from the Website and install the program
  • Additional information at the website, including:  FAQ

NOTES

  • Both 32bit and 64bit versions for Windows are available.
  • Irfanview is also available as an Windows 10 Application from the Microsoft Store

For example,

Irfanview 64bit version – Information and Download

Software and All Plugins for 64bit version:  https://www.fosshub.com/IrfanView.html

Includes Plugin for creating Multiple-page PDF files for images (Poster or large paper printing)

Includes access (where available) to Scan with HP Twain > Adjust settings > Save

How to find Help within the Irfanview software

Once installed, open the software > tab Help

Example help entry:

Vertical/Horizontal Flip

  • Click on the Image Menu, then Vertical Flip. The image will turn upside-down. The left/right orientation will stay the same.
  • Click on the Image Menu, then Horizontal Flip. The image will turn side-to-side, as in a mirror.

Note: The effect can be used on a smaller portion (rectangle selection) of an image, as well as the entire image.

Examples - Irfanview - Simple Photo Prints

Find Options for edits (for example) in Tab Image

Dragon-Fur!

Thanks so much for your help, I'll try it.

One more thing If I can ask:

I'm using HP Advanced Glossy paper.  The paper's instructions say to choose "Advanced" in the paper selection in the Smart app, and then select "Best" in the print quality box.

When I go to print, there's no "Advanced" choice and no choice of "print quality" at all in the HP "Smart" app.

I'd like to get the best quality available.  Any idea on choice in the app?

I appreciate you taking the time to help me.

Install that full driver printer software - then check the available paper size / paper types.

Interestingly, not all paper types are compatible with all paper sizes - try selecting the type and then a compatible paper size.

Once the full driver printer software is installed, the HP Smart application might be better able to manage and select the options you want.

For example, the Full Driver printer software provides access to the Printing Preferences and Shortcuts

Set the Preferences – Windows

NOTES

  • This section is not applicable to Mobile Printing.
  • Access to the complete Printer Preferences requires having installed the Full Driver printer software.
  • Printing Preferences are available directly from the driver.
  • Printing Envelopes?  See NOTE

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences

  • When called from within printing software / applications, Printing Preferences might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" / “More Settings” / “Properties” or similar.

NOTE >> Preferences and Envelopes

Select / leave Printing Preferences Shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.

Example - Printing Preferences - Everyday Printing

9025_Printing_Preferences_Everyday_39025_Printing_Preferences_Everyday_3

What about HP Smart - Windows > Print Photos

Not part of the aforementioned "Scan > Import" option to gain access to the Image editing tools in HP Smart,

standard printing through HP Smart > Print Photos provides a different view point and different options to get that photo onto paper.

For example, in More Settings

Select the Shortcut

Verify / adjust other settings, including print quality setting.

Click OK to save change(s) and exit the More Settings menu

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Simple Photo Print - 4x6 inch - Borderless
