My HP Smart App is asking me to turn on printer before connection can be made. Printer is on, I am able to print to printer, and both computer and printer are on same network. I am trying to get scanning ability to work on my computer.

Hi @Loggerhead12

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the situation. The printer is on and printing works, but the HP App is not recognizing it for scanning. Let’s go through a structured set of steps to restore the scanning ability on your computer.

Confirm Printer Connection in HP App

The HP App must detect the printer for scanning to work.

Open HP App → My Printers

Ensure your printer is listed

If not, click Add Printer and follow prompts

Confirm printer shows as Ready

Run Diagnose & Fix

Most Common Fix

This tool automatically resolves connectivity and scanning issues.

HP App → Printer Settings → Diagnose & Fix

Allow the tool to run fully

Apply any recommended fixes

Restart the HP App after completion

Check Windows Imaging Devices

Windows must recognize the scanner component.

Press Win + R → type devmgmt.msc

Expand Imaging Devices

Verify your HP printer/scanner is listed

If missing, reinstall drivers from HP Support

Update Printer Drivers and Firmware

Outdated drivers or firmware can block scanning.

Visit HP Support → Software & Drivers → Enter Printer Model

Download and install latest Full Feature Software

Update printer firmware if available

Reset HP App Connection

Refreshing the app clears residual connection errors.

Windows Settings → Apps → HP App → Advanced Options → Reset

Reset the HP App

Reopen HP App and re-add the printer

Test scanning from the app

Following these steps should restore scanning functionality. Start with Diagnose & Fix in the HP App, as it often resolves the issue quickly. If needed, proceed through the driver update and app reset steps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
