HP Deskjet F4480 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have installed my HP F4480 printer on my new Windows 10 computer.  It is showing in Windows settings as available, and  I can print, but HP Smart continues to show "Printer offline", and  the buttons don't work.  Scan says "Couldn't Connect To Scanner" and Print Documents says "The printer driver cannot be found".  I have downloaded and run HP Print and Scan Doctor, and HP Support Assistant.  I have removed the printer from Windows, turned both units off, reconnected the USB cable, etc.  I assume this printer is not supported by HP Smart, but I cannot find downloadable drivers on the HP website to install HP Solutions Center like I had working on my Windows 7 machine.  Can anyone help?  Thank you.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help.

I would suggest you try the Windows built-in drivers. Follow the steps below:

•    Go to Control Panel - Devices and Printers - Click on "Add printer" and follow the on-screen instructions.

•    When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.

•    Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.

Refer to this document HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver for help.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks for the response.

I removed and added the printer.  It did not prompt for the drivers.  I was able to find the driver info in Printer Properties.  I found the correct driver and selected it.  In Windows Settings it still shows "Driver is unavailable".  And I still have no way to start a scan operation from the computer.  HP Smart says Printer offline.  I have included a screenshot.  I also restarted the computer after making the changes.

Is there no way to get Solutions Center for Windows 10?  It was a great program and very useful.  Could I try to install the Windows 7 version on the Windows 10 computer?  Thank you.

This Printer does not support HP Smart App.

There are other ways to scan too: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2275901-2074064-16 (please see the FAQ's section)

Windows Fax and Scan - when I click New Scan I get a popup error "No scanners were detected".  When I try to install the Windows Scan app, I get an Unknown error from the Microsoft store.

I tried pressing the Scan button on the printer itself to see if it would initiate some sort of connection, but the lights just flashed for a few seconds and nothing else happened.

Any other ideas?  Thanks.

Are you able to copy?

Yes, using the buttons on the printer I can copy just fine.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

I followed the above steps.  The page you directed me to does not have any downloadable drivers, only the Print and Scan Doctor.  I plugged the printer back in, let Windows select the driver, declined reinstalling HP Smart.  The printer still shows "Driver unavailable" in Windows Settings, but the printer is there, and it does print.

I tried to use Windows Print and Scan, but when I click Scan it says:  No scanners were detected. If a scanner is installed, make sure that it is powered on and connected to the computer, and then try again.

I am able to scan and print from my Windows 7 computer with no issues.  I think I will try installing the old Windows 7 driver package on the new Windows 10 computer.  Do you foresee any issues I should be aware of before I do so?  Thank you.
