I’m experiencing an issue with my HP Smart Tank 7005 printer on Mac OS, where I receive the ‘Expired Certificate’ message. I am able to print successfully from my iPhone using AirPrint, whether via the HP app or other non-HP apps, without any issues. The problem occurs only when printing from my Mac, suggesting it is specific to the Mac OS environment and the HP printer.

For reference:

  • I am using AirPrint.

  • I am operating on Mac OS Sequoia version 15.6.1.

I have tried multiple troubleshooting steps:

  • Resetting the printer to factory settings.

  • Deleting and reinstalling the printer in Mac OS settings using a Bonjour connection.

  • Accessing the printer’s EWS to delete and reset the certificate multiple times.

The certificate shows an expiry date of 2035, so the resetting appears to be functioning correctly. Despite all these steps, I still receive the ‘Expired Certificate’ message when attempting to print from my Mac. This is extremely frustrating and has forced me to print using my iPhone app, which is inconvenient.

Has anyone successfully resolved this issue? The HP knowledge base solutions for Mac OS have not worked.”

If you are experiencing 'Printer Offline' or 'Printer Not Responding' error messages on your Mac, follow the steps in this video to reset the printing system and resolve these common printing problems. We'll show you how to fix the problem by removing your printer from your Mac and adding it ...

Thank you for the suggestion. I followed the steps in the video exactly, which was resetting the printer settings and re-adding the printer, but unfortunately, the issue persists. The message “expired certificate – check the printer for errors” still appears and prevents any printing after I did this.

I’ve observed that this only occurs when the printer is added using the HP Smart Tank 7000 series driver. If I select the General PCL Driver instead, I am able to print without the certificate error appearing. However, the output does not print correctly, and many HP-specific features are unavailable with this generic driver.

This suggests the issue is specifically related to the HP Smart Tank 7000 series driver on macOS.

Could you please advise if there are any other troubleshooting steps or alternative solutions available?

Hi @RichMGB

Thank your for the additional information about the issue with the series driver.

Ok, for alternative solution, then install the next Smart Tank driver for your printer:

Resolved: MacOS & HP Printer Certificate Conflict

After much frustration, I finally tracked down the cause of this issue. The problem turned out to be a certificate conflict between MacOS Keychain and the HP printer. The fix is simple, but not well-documented.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Open Spotlight Search and type Keychain Access.app.

  2. From the pop-up, choose Open Keychain Access (second option).

  3. In Keychain Access, search for HP Smart Tank in the top-right search bar.

  4. You may see several results. Locate HP Smart Tank in the bottom results pane and delete it.

  5. Restart your Mac.

This resolves the certificate conflict and restores proper printer functionality.

Note: Ensure that your printer’s certificate has a valid (future) expiry date. You can verify or regenerate the certificate using the HP Smart mobile app or the printer’s web settings page.
