I have filled the ink reservoirs several times with no problem. However,  today the Cyan ink chamber is empty. I have put the genuine Cyan HP ink bottle onto the reservoir fitting in the usual way,  but the ink simply wont drain into the empty reservoir. Please can someone advise.

Hi @Mike980,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the genuine HP 31 Cyan ink is not flowing into the reservoir of your HP Smart Tank Plus 559, here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check for Air Blockage: Sometimes, air can get trapped in the ink tube, preventing the ink from flowing. Gently squeeze the ink bottle while it’s in position to help create a vacuum that may allow the ink to flow.
  • Inspect the Ink Bottle and Nozzle: Ensure that the nozzle of the ink bottle is clean and free of any obstructions. Sometimes, dried ink can clog the nozzle.
  • Reinsert the Ink Bottle: Remove the ink bottle and reinsert it, ensuring it fits snugly and that there’s a good seal. Make sure to press down firmly, but not excessively.
  • Check for Damage: Inspect the ink reservoir for any visible damage or cracks. If the reservoir is damaged, it may need to be replaced.
  • Try a Different Bottle: If you have another HP 31 Cyan ink bottle available, try using it to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the original bottle is faulty.
  • Clean the Reservoir Area: Ensure that the area around the ink reservoir is clean. Dust or debris can interfere with the ink flow.
  • Allow Time for Ink to Drain: After you set the ink bottle, give it a few minutes to see if the ink begins to drain into the reservoir on its own.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Mike980,

Thank you for your response,

Here are some advanced troubleshooting steps to consider.

Check the Ink Delivery System:

  • Inspect the ink delivery system for any blockages or kinks in the ink tubing that may be obstructing the flow of ink. If you see any issues, gently straighten out any kinks.

Perform an Ink System Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for at least 5 minutes. This can sometimes reset the printer's internal systems and help with ink flow issues.

Examine the Ink Cap:

  • Look at the cap on the ink bottle (if applicable) and make sure it's not damaged. A damaged cap may prevent proper ink flow. Replace the bottle if necessary.

Check for Vacuum Formation:

  • Sometimes, a vacuum can prevent ink from entering the reservoir. After removing the ink bottle, place a piece of clean cloth over the opening of the reservoir to block it momentarily. Then, gently squeeze the bottle while it’s in place to allow ink to flow. This can help release any vacuum seal.

Perform a Manual Ink Fill:

  • If you're comfortable doing so, you might consider filling the reservoir manually using a syringe (without a needle) to see if the ink will flow in. Be careful not to overfill or spill ink.

Inspect the Printer for Firmware Issues:

  • Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, bugs in the firmware can affect ink management. Use the HP Smart app or visit the HP support website for updates.

Check for Compatibility Issues:

  • Ensure that the ink bottle you’re using is indeed compatible with your printer model. Even slight variations in the model can sometimes cause compatibility issues.

By following these advanced steps, you may be able to resolve the ink flow issue in your HP Smart Tank Plus 559.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

My HP app says everything is up to date on updates. Leaving it with power off and then reconnecting after 15 mins has not worked, Trying the cloth did not work. Filling manually with syringe just resulted in ink coming upwards, not up through the nozzle of the pointed nozzle bit of the reservoir that goes into the filling ink bottle but up from the immediate area underneath it. I am using the correct ink and bottle. I've successfully used the same before, I have bough and tried a new bottle. it does not work. Are there any other options. I cannot believe the ink wont just go in like it should. I bought a smart tank in the hope it would be reliable and straight forward. Until now it was. You suggest I look at the "ink tubing" I don't see any ink tubing. Where is the ink tubing and how do I access it?

Hi @Mike980,

Thank you for your response,

Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the ink filling problem.

Check for Clogs:

  • Make sure the nozzle on the ink bottle is clean and free from any obstructions.
  • Check the ink reservoir for any dried ink or debris that might be clogging the inlet.

Inspect the Reservoir:

  • Ensure that the ink reservoir is seated correctly in the printer. Sometimes, misalignment can cause filling issues.

Reprime the Ink System:

  • Try priming the ink system by running a cleaning cycle from the HP Smart app. This can help remove any air bubbles in the ink lines.

Use the Correct Technique:

  • When filling the reservoir, make sure to hold the ink bottle at a slight angle to allow air to escape and help the ink flow better.

Let it Rest:

  • After attempting to fill the ink, let the printer sit for a while to see if gravity can help the ink flow down into the reservoir.

Reset the Printer:

  • If you haven’t already, perform a factory reset on the printer. Sometimes, resetting can resolve software issues that might affect ink filling.

Try Another Method:

  • If using a syringe, ensure you’re inserting it into the correct spot. Try applying gentle pressure when filling, but do not force it, as this could cause more issues.

Hopefully, one of these solutions will help you get your ink flowing again!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
