HP Smart

I cannot connect my HP Smart app to the HP Laserjet Printers because HP Smart requires location access first (which, unfortunately, has been restricted and disabled by the admin of my company)

Hi, can anyone help me solve this problem?

Tried connecting using HP Direct and even USB, yet same pop-up window appears when i click add printer...

-------------------------------

I've been using HP Smart when scanning documents. When i have received this new HP Desktop computer, i was able to connect HP Smart to the HP Laserjet printers of this office and was able to use the scan feature of the said app.

However, just last week, when the office installed a new HP Laserjet printer, i was trying to connect HP Smart in order to allow scanning. To my surprise, whenever i click "Add/Set up a Printer" this message pops up:

HP Smart - pop up problem.png

Exiting the setup does nothing, and Location Settings brings me to the app permission of HP Smart, which again has been disabled by the admin of my company.

Can anyone please help me on how can i add printers WITHOUT the need to grant location access?

@Ron_12, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Based on your description, you're encountering a location permission requirement in the HP Smart app that prevents you from adding a printer, despite trying USB and Wi-Fi Direct methods. Since your company admin has disabled location access, here's how you can work around this limitation.

Why HP Smart Requires Location Access

HP Smart uses location services to:

  • Detect nearby wireless printers
  • Comply with Android/iOS/Windows privacy policies for network scanning

However, this is not mandatory if you already know the printer's IP address or are using USB.

Workaround Steps to Add Printer Without Location Access

For Windows 10/11 HP Smart App

Connect via USB or Network (without HP Smart):

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners
  • Click Add a printer or scanner
  • If your printer is not detected, click “The printer that I want isn’t listed”
  • Choose “Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname”
  • Enter the printer’s IP address (you can get this from the printer’s control panel or configuration page)

Once added, open HP Smart:

  • It should now detect the printer automatically without needing location access.
  • If not, try restarting the app.

Use HP Scan or Windows Fax and Scan:

  • If scanning is your main goal, you can use HP Scan (installed with full driver package) or Windows Fax and Scan as alternatives.

If You’re on a Managed Device (Company Admin Restrictions)

Since your admin has restricted permissions:

  • You may need to request temporary access or ask IT to add the printer manually using the steps above.
  • Alternatively, ask them to install the full HP printer software from HP Software and Driver Downloads.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
