Microsoft Windows 11

I accidentally deleted HP Smart from my desktop computer (I know stupid on my part).  I tried to get it back through 123.hp.com and that does not work.  When I go to HP Site and download it, it says I have to get from Microsoft Store.  Goes to store and I get an error message that something went wrong and it goes away.  Contacted MS and they were no help at all.  I can print sometimes, but I cannot scan, copy, fax, etc.  without HP Smart. I have paperwork to fax to my doctor and cannot scan and fax.  This all happened yesterday and I have been working to get it fixed, but cannot.  This morning I saw something that said HP Smart has been replaced with HP App and I cannot do anything with that either.  There is no HP Printer in my Program Files, but I have the HP Printer and Doctor on my desktop.  I wanted to set printer to factory settings and start over but that doesn't work either.  HELP!!!!  I am lost without the scan and Fax options.  Thank you.

Welcome to the HP Community --

The following is an attempt and hopefully useful to help you get back on track...

First,

  • HP Smart has not (yet) been replaced with the HP App on Windows.
  • Android is switched to HP App.
  • iOS is "in progress" by region -- some people will see / get HP App, others "not yet" and are still on HP Smart.

Next,

Forget the HP Scan and Print Doctor -- it's not going to help and should (for other reasons) be removed from your computer.  Worry about that later, I think.   When you have time, get rid of the old Doctor app.

Next,

Windows Store should work.

HP Smart shows (on my setup) as "there".

Why is it not working for you?

No idea.

-- Preparation --

If not done after having uninstalled HP Smart,

Restart your computer and log in

Open

123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site

and

enter your printer model name:

HP DeskJet 4158e All-in-One Printer

then

The Setup page opens -

An example --

https://123.hp.com/us/en/devices/dj4158e

Select "Or, continue with computer"

See the Troubleshooting list for the Store.

Check / complete each as is reasonable for your situation.

Store Fixes recreated below:

Check and update Windows version

To check for updates, select “Start” > “Settings” > “Windows Update”. Select “Check for Updates”.

If any Updates are installed -- or you see any Updates "Pending" -- Restart the computer and log in.

Disconnect from a VPN

Apps from the Microsoft Store might not install when connected to a VPN.

Consider location and the security of the Wi-Fi network before disconnecting from a VPN.

Skip Microsoft account creation

If prompted to create or sign in to a Microsoft account, close the window.

You will be able to open the app store anyways.

A Microsoft account is not required to install or use HP Smart.

HP Smart is a free software for printer setup and use.

Check computer time and location settings

If the Microsoft Store won’t open, verify your time settings are correct.
Select “Start” > “Settings” > “Time & Language”.
Check the “Date & time” and “Region” to make sure they are your current location and time zone.

Dragon Note >>
Make sure the clock (on your computer) is correct.
If the time is wrong, the store can't sync.

Reset the Microsoft Store cache

Press the Windows key + R to open the “Run” dialog box, type “wsreset.exe”, and then select “OK”.
A blank window will open for about 10 seconds, then the app store will launch automatically.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Next,

On your computer --

If you are running Dark Mode / High-Contrast,

Switch OFF Dark Mode / Set High-Contrast to "None"

What?

  • HP Smart (at this writing) struggles with Dark Mode or High Contrast settings.
  • If you need help due to sight limitations, find a friend, family member, or colleague to help make the switch.
  • After HP Smart is working and you have added your printer, the Dark Mode / High Contrast can switched on.

Example -- Settings > Personalization > Colors

Settings_Personalization_Colors_Dark_Light_Mode_Contrast_Themes_2Settings_Personalization_Colors_Dark_Light_Mode_Contrast_Themes_2

=======================================

Will that be enough?

Maybe.

If you can at least get to the point where you can get HP Smart installed,

You can try opening the HP Smart app to add your printer.

If the HP Smart application installs and opens, but balks at adding your printer,

HP Smart can be Reset to remove the "app data" from within your account (on your computer).
