HP OfficeJet Pro 9018e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I just bought a  Dell XPS 13 Co-Pilot with Snapdragon Elite ARM processor.

When I install the HP Smart, it installed the HP-9018 printer/driver, but I don't see the HP Smart Printing printer like I do on my other Intel PC:

I have the same problem on a guest Window ARM VM I am running on VMWare Fusion running on a host Mac M1 (ARM) machine.  Makes me think something might not be working well with the emulator in Windows that runs this HP Smart software.

Anyone got any ideas?  Thanks.

Hi @racer_x_2502,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

The issue you're experiencing with the HP Smart app on your Dell XPS 13 with a Snapdragon Elite ARM processor, as well as on a guest Windows ARM VM, likely stems from compatibility challenges with the Windows on ARM environment. Windows on ARM devices use a different architecture than traditional Intel or AMD x86/x64 processors, which can sometimes lead to issues with software and driver compatibility.

Here’s what might be happening and some potential solutions:

1. HP Smart App Compatibility with ARM

  • The HP Smart app and its associated drivers might not be fully optimized or compatible with ARM processors. While Windows on ARM devices can emulate x86/x64 applications, this emulation isn't always perfect, particularly with software that requires deep integration with hardware like printer drivers.

2. Missing HP Smart Printing Driver

  • The "HP Smart Printing" printer is a virtual printer that the HP Smart app typically installs to manage printing tasks. If this driver isn't appearing, it suggests that either the driver isn't compatible with ARM or the emulation layer is not handling it correctly.

3. Check for ARM-Specific Drivers

  • HP’s Support Website: Visit the HP support website to check if there are any ARM-specific drivers or updates for your printer model. Sometimes, manufacturers release ARM-compatible drivers or specific versions of their software.
  • Windows Update: Make sure your Windows on ARM device is fully updated. Microsoft periodically improves ARM support, and there might be updates that improve compatibility with devices like printers.

4. Use Built-in Windows Print Functionality

  • You might be able to use the built-in Windows print functionality as a workaround. Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners and see if you can add the printer manually using Windows’ built-in drivers.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @racer_x_2502,

Please find the next steps below.

5. Try an Alternative Printing Method

  • Print via USB: If your printer is connected via USB, try using it directly without relying on the HP Smart app. This might bypass the issues caused by the app's incompatibility.
  • Print to PDF: On your ARM device, try printing to PDF first and then using another device to print the PDF document to your HP printer. This is a bit of a workaround but can be effective if direct printing is not possible.

6. HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor on your ARM device. This tool can sometimes detect and fix issues with printer installations.

7. Check Emulation Settings in VMware Fusion

  • For the Windows ARM VM running on VMware Fusion, check the emulation settings. Ensure that the VM is set to emulate the correct environment for your printer’s software. If possible, try switching between different emulation modes to see if it affects the printer driver installation.

This situation highlights the challenges of running older or non-native applications on ARM-based devices. However, with continued updates from both Microsoft and HP, there may be better support in the future.

If none of these solutions work, it may be beneficial to contact HP phone support further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
