You can use the Printer software then instead, to scan.

Hi again, that worked insofar as the HP Smart thing now has dialogue, but the scan function doesn't work - message attached. It just spins its wheels??

They never answered the question!!!! Do I SERIOUSLY have to go through that every time???? This is the 3rd time already that the HP Smart Screen is blank and I've had to go through this twice already!!!!

Hi Lori, yes you are correct. In the end I found this short cut on my desktop (after I reinstalled) and just used it and ignored the so called Smart Screen

I've been battling with this all day, after getting a HP Envy Pro 6400 as my old printer packed in this week.

I'm also getting a blank screen... But by accident, I was trying to do 2 things at once, as tried to get my iPad to print. All of a sudden the printer printed the page from my iPad and the HP Smart page came into life on the PC. 

I think the HP Smart app cannot wake the printer up if its gone to sleep, and it took a print from another device to do so. 

Sort this out HP. I must say your Apps are appalling... 

Also, I cannot get the printer to scan at all.. Wish I'd bought another printer now.

Yep... thats definitly the problem. The App cant wake the printer up. It just did it again, only this time I hit the Info button on the printer and it woke up and showed in the app.

Poor app design... very poor.

Still cant scan either...

Yes they don't ever answer the problem at HP...not sure why they bother with a forum if they never respond.

Now that no longer works, so back to square one. No help from HP though

I have the same issue, it was working at first but now HP Smart is just a blank screen. My printer is HP Officejet 6500A Plus and it's gone so slow. Is there a way to disable all those HP online services and just use the printer wirelessly from windows laptop using windows app. It is impossible to get the scanner to work since the latest HP software upgrades.
