HP OfficeJet Pro 8134e All-in-One Printer

Since I was not able to reply to old topics concerning this problem, here's a new topic:

While installing my brand new HP OfficeJet Pro 8134e, the HP SMart setup finalization was unable to finish (hanged forever).

My printer has been setup to WiFi, and my computer is connected to the home network through ethernet.

So I used th HP Smart application on iOS (iPhone connected to WiFI), after performing a factory reset of the printer.

I went through all the steps, and was finally able to finish the setup, activate HP+ feature and subscribe to instant ink.

So I suspect the WiFi  / ethernet topology on my Windows computer to have been the issue, or maybe it's related to the windows app HP Smart.

Anyway, if you encounter the same problem, try to perform the full setup from a smartphone or a tablet if you plan to connect your printer in WiFI instead of USB, because, yes <sarcastic mode on>, in 2025 a smartphone is more reliable to install a printer than a full high end computer running Windows < mode off>
Voilà.

Hi @Mickou06,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8134e printer setup is not completing on Windows 10 through HP Smart, even though it works when set up via a smartphone. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

1. Network Connection Check

Since your PC is on Ethernet and the printer is on Wi-Fi, ensure both are on the same network (same SSID/subnet).

If possible, temporarily connect your PC to Wi-Fi and retry the setup.

2. Restart Devices

Restart your router, printer, and PC.

After the restart, open HP Smart again and try the setup.

3. Update HP Smart App & Windows

Make sure you’re using the latest version of the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store.

Run Windows Update to ensure your system has the latest patches.

4. Reset Printer Setup Mode

Perform a network reset on the printer (from the control panel → Wireless Settings → Restore Network Defaults).

Reconnect it to Wi-Fi and confirm the printer’s IP address on its control panel.

5. Add Printer Manually

On Windows, go to Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners → Add a printer.

If it doesn’t appear automatically, select “The printer that I want isn’t listed” → enter the printer’s IP address manually.

6. Temporarily Disable Security Software

Some firewalls or antivirus programs may block HP Smart from finalizing setup.

Temporarily disable them and retry.

7. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP’s website.

It can automatically detect and fix network/driver conflicts.

8. USB Setup (as a workaround)

Connect the printer temporarily via USB.

Complete the setup in HP Smart, then switch the printer back to Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps.

1. Network Connection Check

My home network is working perfectly fine. I had an Epson printer for years, never had to use USB connection to complete printer setup nor administrate my printer.

2. Restart Devices

Done... No effect.

3. Update HP Smart App & Windows

Windows 10 daily updated, HP Smart freshly installed from the Microsoft App Store. No effect.

4. Reset Printer Setup Mode

Done. The WiFI SSID + password provisioning made by HP Smart was successful, I can see the printer on my WiFi network, its IP address, signal quality is excellent.

5. Add Printer Manually

This step is a fallback; when you do so, printer is added to Windows, and then you miss:

 - scanner device creation,

 - ink level monitoring,

 - HP+ connection of the printer to HP cloud (required if you plan to remotely use the printer from anywhere, or subscribe to Instant Ink paid subscription).

6. Temporarily Disable Security Software

As many people, Windows defender is the active antivirus solution running on my computer. It reported nothing (no access blocked, no files/process put in quarantine). Installing a printer using an IP address never required super risky / high privileged escalation up to the point of disabling a computer protection entirely.

Again, Epson software suite works out of the box, without requiring to expose your net attached device by disabling Windows antivirus solution.

7. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

Done. They only reported that a printer was available, and waiting for setup completion (of course!).

8. USB Setup (as a workaround)

Untested, the setup process was re-started after Factory reset of the printer using HP Smart on iOS, which is not convenient/possible/feasible for most of your customers.

Hi @Mickou06,

Thank you for the detailed follow-up. I understand that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8134e successfully connects and completes setup via HP Smart on iOS, but the Windows 10 app consistently hangs during the finalization. I also see that you’ve already tried all the usual troubleshooting steps—network checks, restarting devices, updating HP Smart, resetting the printer, manual IP setup, disabling security software, and running HP Print and Scan Doctor—without success.

It seems this issue is likely related to the Windows HP Smart app itself rather than your network, hardware, or antivirus. Occasionally, HP Smart on Windows can encounter setup conflicts that don’t occur on iOS or mobile platforms.

Continue using the printer via HP Smart on iOS for HP+ features, ink monitoring, and remote printing. The printer itself is fully functional on your network.

Avoid the Windows Smart app setup for now, since it may be a known compatibility or network stack issue in certain Windows 10 builds.

Optionally, you can install the printer manually in Windows for basic printing/scanning, but you will not have HP+ cloud integration or Instant Ink registration.

Monitor HP support updates for Windows HP Smart—future updates often fix these setup hanging issues.

I understand this is less convenient than a full Windows installation, but your current iOS setup ensures all HP+ features work and the printer is fully usable.

I hope this helps.

So basically, using a HP printer with a PC can lead to unusable full featured product, unless you get a smartphone or a tablet?.... How this is supposed to help, and be accepted as a "Solution"?

If there's a problem with THE windows application provided by HP, then:

 - solution 1 (the good one): Ask the Windows HP Smart developers to investigate, providing this problem background and history I've listed...

 - solution 2 (lazy one you won't be authorized to do 😅 😞 advertise Windows 10 compatibility issue for your network printers (pretty brutal, I definitively think there's a bug in Windows HP Smart application),

 - solution 3 (super quick and dirty one, the one you're enforcing apparently): admit nasty first experience due to poor software quality happens, and since the guy reporting it has found a way to circumvent his problem, then there's no problem too for the hundreds of people complaining around the web that they cannot complete printer configuration...

(Ps: As you may have guessed, I won't click on 'Accept As Solution'... 🙄)
