HP Smart won't open. I can't get the printer to work. A job will start, get about 10% complete, then I get a "waiting for printer availability" message and nothing ever happens.

@UltimateWines, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to print from your Mac using the HP app.

To assist you better, what model printer are you using?

Refer to this document to know how to find the Product Name or Product Number.

Did you download the Hp app from the App Store?

  1.     If installed from HP.com please delete from /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/HP app. Then delete HP app from the Applications folder and reinstall from the Mac App Store.
  2.     If downloaded from the Mac App Store please remove /Users/Username/Library/Containers/HP app/containers.plist and then launch HP app from the Applications folder and go through the setup again.

How is the printer connected to the Mac?

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi Kumamoto,

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 All-in-One printer. I downloaded the HP Smart app from the App Store. When I click on the app (like many other people have reported) the app starts to open and after a few seconds it closes without ever actually opening. The printer has a network connection. I’ve tried to connect wirelessly but that always fails.

Thank you for the information. Let us try these steps:

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on Mac

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Install the printer using the AirPrint driver (recommended)

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Note: Select "Bonjour multifunction" under kind while installing.

Try printing.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kumar,

Tried to install firmware but when I did, I got the message that there were no firmware updates for my device. When I'm in the HP Utility I can print the configuration page with no problem.  However, when I try to print anything else (for example, a web page, the print order goes to the print queue then I get the message "waiting for printer to become available" and nothing ever happens. I've tried turning the printer off and back on. No help. I updated my Mac software, then tried to print and got the following -

printing 11%

waiting for printer to become available

printing 21%

waiting for printer to become available,

then ... nothing. Completely stuck.

Don't know how to find the AirPrint driver. Where is it?

Deleted and reinstalled my printer in System Preferences but I don't see a "use" or "print using" menu anywhere.

Help!!!

First, let us check the connectivity.

  • Make sure the printer and the Mac are connected to the same wireless network. Either 2.4 or 5GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.

Perform a ping test to check the connectivity

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. Open a new Terminal window (it's located in Applications > Utilities, or you can just start typing it in Spotlight).
  3. Enter “ping” followed by the IP address of the printer.
  4. Press Return. Press ctrl C after 10 pings
  5. There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

I have mentioned the steps to install the printer using the Airprint driver in my previous post. Kindly check the same.

Once the printer is installed using the Airprint driver, try printing.

Let me know how it goes.
