Hi @alpinefirs,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Hide the Update:

  • Microsoft provides a tool called "Show or Hide Updates" that allows you to hide specific updates.
  • Download the tool from the Microsoft website, run it, and follow the instructions to hide the problematic update.

Update Manually:

  • Visit the HP Support Page and manually download the latest drivers for your printer.
  • Install the drivers on your computer manually, which might prevent the Windows Update from attempting another driver installation.

Use Device Manager:

  • Open Device Manager on your computer.
  • Locate your printer under "Printers" or "Universal Serial Bus controllers."
  • Right-click your printer and select "Update driver."
  • Choose "Browse my computer for driver software" and point it to the folder where you extracted the downloaded drivers from HP.

Windows Update Troubleshooter:

  • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter by navigating to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Select "Windows Update" and run the troubleshooter to detect and repair issues preventing updates.

Check for System Errors:

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Run sfc /scannow to check for and address any issues with your system files.
  • Next, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to repair any corruption in the Windows image.

Reset Windows Update Components:

  • Sometimes, resetting Windows Update components can resolve errors.
  • Microsoft provides a script or steps to manually reset these components which may help resolve the issue.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍

Hello again and thank you for the suggestions and your efforts. Unfortunately, for me, for my situation, none of the suggestions worked, did not remove or complete the installation update.

What I did notice, however, is that my HP Smart app was still showing 2 printers, though only one was installed, and that a different Model Number than the one calling in the Windows Update HP update. So, I set about trying to find how to delete the second, removed printer information. Trying in the HP Smart app did not work, although it was saying I SHOULD have been able to. What I later found, is that my HP ACCOUNT was holding information on the many printers I have had/used since about 2004. Therefore, I deleted all but the most current one, did a restart-no luck! The faulty HP Update was still showing.

But, go figure, as of first light this morning, and subsequently 2 other tries, the faulty update has disappeared from Windows Update. This is what I was expecting last evening. It might be that it took overnight for HP Servers to catch up with the changes I made, I do not know, but I am with renewed hope that this bug may have finally gone away, at least for now.

Respectively submitted;

Hi @alpinefirs,

Thank you so much for the detailed update and for taking the time to troubleshoot so thoroughly.

I’m glad to hear the phantom update finally cleared itself, and I hope it stays that way. If the issue resurfaces, feel free to reach back out, we’re always here to help you dig deeper if needed.

Wishing you smooth printing and a bug-free update experience going forward!

Best regards,
