I have been working on thos for a month now and all the settings in both the printer and software are set to Envelope 10 which is standard and should work but does not. I keep getting the same error message that the paper does not match custom settings. But they do, this printer must be defective but hp does not respond to my calls.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
That sounds incredibly frustrating—especially after a month of trying everything that should work.
Let’s walk through a few recommended steps that have helped in similar situations and see if we can finally get those envelopes printing without a fuss:
📏 Step 1: Confirm Envelope Size and Type
- Make sure you're using #10 envelopes that are plain (no glossy finish or embellishments).
- HP recommends loading envelopes print-side down, flap on the left in the main tray.
🖨 Step 2: Set Paper Type on the Printer Itself
- On the printer’s touchscreen:
- Go to Settings > Paper Setup > Tray 1.
- Set the paper size to Envelope #10 and paper type to Envelope.
- Confirm and save the settings.
This step ensures the printer knows exactly what’s loaded before the job is sent.
💻 Step 3: Match Settings in Software
- In your print dialog (from Word, etc.):
- Click Printer Properties or Preferences.
- Under the Paper/Quality tab, set:
- Paper Size: Envelope #10
- Paper Type: Envelope
- Source: Tray 1 (if selectable)
- Click OK, then print.
🛠 Step 4: Use HP Smart App (Optional)
- Open the HP Smart app on your PC.
- Select your printer > Print Documents.
- Choose your envelope file and set the paper size/type to Envelope #10 before printing.
🧹 Step 5: Reset Print Settings (if the error persists)
- On the printer, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
- Reconfigure the paper tray and try printing again.
If the error still pops up after all this, let me know exactly when it appears (before printing, during, or after), and I’ll help dig deeper. You’ve been incredibly patient—let’s make this the last time you have to wrestle with envelope settings!
