I have an HP evny series printer that I had used mutiple times before with no problem. In the middle of printing a document, it stopped and said HP recommends I use ColorLok paper for best results and it wont let me print anymore. I didn't change the paper I had been using and it is in there correctly. I tried printing both in color and black and white and turning the printer off and back on. Is there any way around this besides using that specific paper? I shouldn't have to use it if I had been using regular printer paper the whole time.

Hi @bstout91,
Thanks for showing an interest in the HP community. A Good day to you.” 🙂 I reviewed the post regarding errors with the printing media that you’ve used for a long time now.. It will be a genuine pleasure to assist you. 🙂
Superb effort, commendable description and very smart diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂 You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I also take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂
First off, we need to isolate the issue to correctly to being hardware or software related.
Please ensure that you follow all the steps in this print quality report from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-7600-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/6617267/model/6617268/d... and check if it prints fine. This report is independent of the printer or the computer. If the report fails the printer may have a hardware issue.
If the report comes out correctly, then please uninstall the complete printer software by following these steps:
1. Navigate to Start >Type Devices and Printers in the Search > Select it from the results
2. Highlight your printer object and Right Click
3. Choose Remove Device
4. Highlight something else from the list
5. Click the Print Server Properties button from the toolbar
6. Select the Drivers Tab
7. Highlight the appropriate print driver
8. Click Remove
9. Check the Remove Driver and Driver Package option when prompted
10. Click OK
Then reinstall the full feature software from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-ENVY-7600-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/6617267/mod... Please select the operating system and follow the on-screen instructions to re-install it. This should do the trick for you. Please update the printer firmware also.
Please keep me posted. I will keep a watch for your reply.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

I tried all of the steps provided in the link but of course I couldn't test anything because it wont print. I reset the printing settings, cleaned the cartidges, which are full, I realigned the printer, and basically did everything that has to do with the printer, except printing. Maybe it is a hardware problem? Should I try uninstalling the software and reinstalling it anyway?
I just don't understand why out of nowhere it tells me I'm out of paper and I need to use ColorLok when it worked perfectly fine before.

Hi @bstout91,
I reviewed the post comprehensively. Thanks for trying out these steps. You've done some outstanding and fabulous troubleshooting to try and correct the situation. 🙂 Hats off to you for that. 🙂 Brilliant effort.:) It has been an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂 Trust me, I've done all I can to assist you, by keeping your best interest in mind.
Please try a hard reset on the printer from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-7640-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/6617267/model/6617268/d... please perform only step 1 for doing the hard reset and check if it corrects the issue.
If it does not then I think that you need to change the paper to correct the situation. Please make sure that you use the same media that is supported by your printer. Please check the product specifications from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-7640-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/6617267/model/6617268/d...
Please look up these options in the specs sheet:
- Paper handling
- Paper handling - ADF
- Paper handling - Duplexer
I honestly hope the printer works great and stays healthy for a long time to come. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
You take care, stay healthy, keep smiling big and do have a blessed year ahead. 🙂

I tried step one with the reset. Same thing. Where can I get this colorlok paper?
Thank you so much for your help though.
Also something I didn't mention before whenever it suggests the colorlok it also says "out of paper" but when I load paper into the try in makes a noise and says "original loaded' so I know it senses there is paper in the tray just not exactly sure what that means

Thank you for the details about the error message you've been receiving, that helps enormously,
That said, Here's a related HP Forums post that seems to have helped others: Click here for the steps.
And here's a few other steps I have collated to resolve your concern:
Solution one: Check the paper, and then reload it
Follow these steps to check the condition of the paper, and then print a test page.
Solution two: Adjust the paper settings in the print driver
The printer might not pick up paper if the paper size and type in the paper tray do not match the paper size and type settings in the print driver. Select your operating system for steps to change the paper size and type settings in the print driver.
Solution three: Clean the paper feed and pick rollers
Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed and pick rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Use the following steps to clean the rollers inside the printer, and then try to print a Printer Status Report.

The link posted in this HP employees answer about colorlok paper does not work. I reinstalled the software for my Photosmart 7520 and that solution did not work.
HP is seeming to demand that we buy Colorlok paper for their printers...the paper we have been using apparently has been screened out by their software....also, I presume that I cannot use the printer for envelopes anymore - don't know about whether the HP photopaper for photo printing will work.
I could not find a solution in the forum anywhere....
Perhaps we should now consider identifying another - more user friendly - vendor for our printing needs...

I was in business for 20 years, then retired 20 years ago. I always did my own Christmas cards, borderless, and had HP printers. A few years ago, I bought one that was supposed to do so, and would not, so I took it back and got an HP Officejet Pro 8620 all in one for all home use, but especially to do greeting cards on Avery greeting card paper. I spent hours and nights and early morning on line with support who tried various things (very unwisely) and couldn't get my cards to work. After 3-4 years, I have no problem printing on my Avery greeting card paper for one or two, but at Christmas every year am furious.
There is no problem with photos, you just lie to the computer, butIt takes me days or weeks to do 200 cards because of the
colorLok thing. I keep adjusting (but every year forget exactly what I did; the previous year) and finally get to where I can get it started by pushing the "ok" several times, then it chugs out a few cards and I have to start again.
HP has changed and no longer cares about customers. We just have to find a company that cares what the customer wants. They could have worked this out years ago.

I might add that it has nothing to do with ink, cleaning, etc. It is because HP has gone proprietary and wants certain papers used. This afternoon Idid try using "HPAdvanced Photos" on my Christmas Cards and it's working pretty well. Of course, the little lnkjets are not as fast as lasers. You may not be able to do a long run -- 30-40 cards and run off and let it do its own thing, but you won't have to hit the "OK" button as many times to keep it going. (I am going to try a longer run now as I have other things to do.
Photos, business cards and other papers are easier to do; we never have had a problem once we figured it out -- but the cardstock setting doesn't work at all and the plain paper has to be babied, so this is working pretty well for my Avery Greeting cards. Hope this helps.
