Hi everyone,
I run into problems with installing the HP software for my printer, an office-jet pro 6830
Summary of system:
Reasonably old PC (Dell Optiplex), upgraded with SSD and Video card and extra memory + fastest supported CPU (E5800)
Windows 10 prof. 1909 clean install.
Connected with Gigabit Ethernet to ASUS router with internet working and on the same network and IP range, the wireless connected HP Officejet.
Software from HP : OJ6830_74 (dot) EXE
The printer was already installed and the scanner too by windows and using the windows scan app everything works!
BUT.... I would like to use the features in the bundled software from the printer like "scan to PC" and for this to work the HP software needs to be installed.
I installed the software (version mentioned above) and it went through without problems (I thought) and when clicking on the thumbnail in the windows start menu, I was directed to the "retrieving printer data" splash screen and it opened, I configured the scan to PC and that was it, everything worked.
UNTIL: I clicked the icon the software made on my desktop (yes the same to open the HP software) and it started to install the printer all over again, I broke off the install and went to the start menu to click it from there, same result... software wants to install the already installed printer again.
When doing this install, it keeps hanging on the installing network printer splash screen and eventually fails due to a connection error it says. However before installing the printer, it first detects it already on the network (otherwise you need to fill in the IP address).
It does not matter what I try, the HP software keeps hanging on the network installation screen over and over again.
I have tried anything you can imagine, even modifying the registry like in other cases was suggested, nothing helped.
The stupid thing is that Windows has no problem with detecting and (re)installing the drivers again and again, the machine works, it scans and it prints like it should, I just cannot get the scan to PC function to work.
Infuriating!!
What surprised me most is that my XP machine on the same network, works flawless and gives me much more options to choose from in the start menu after installation. I can even go separately to all apps instead of first needing to load and or retrieve the info from the printer like the first and only time this worked on the Win 10 machine.
Apparently this is a problem that is occurring not only with me, however the other threads about this problem have no solutions other than to call the helpdesk and let them take over the machine and do the installation remotely . I tried for example this: https://support.hp.com/nz-en/document/c05032099
To be clear, the problem is not with the printer/scanner, it works flawless on all other non Win10 Machines connected to the same network. The problem is also not that the printer does not work, as I said above, everything works except the HP software so the " scan to PC" function does not work. That is all I need!! (for now)
I wonder if there is any of you out there that actually has a solution that does not involve everything I mentioned above and in this document: https://support.hp.com/nz-en/document/c05032099
Or this (tried it too) : https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Inkjet-Printing/Where-is-quot-scan-to-computer-quot-software/m-p/60611...

Welcome to HP support community.
Check Windows Image Acquisition settings
-
In Windows, search for and open View local services.
-
In the Services window, scroll down the list and find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
-
Look at the Status and Startup Type values.
-
If the status is Started or Running and the Startup Type is Automatic, WIA is running correctly. Skip to the next step.
-
If the status is Disabled or no status displays, right-click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), click Properties, click the General tab, select Automatic from the Startup type dropdown menu, and then click Start.
If the Start button is grayed out, go back to the Services menu, make sure Remote Procedure Call, Shell Hardware Detection, RPC Endpoint Mapper, and DCOM Server Process Launcher are running and set as Automatic, and then start WIA.

I hope that helps.
To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.
Cheers.
