After reading your good news, I tried again.  Unfortunately, nothing has changed.  Same error message and printer does not respond.  What did you do in the meantime on your computer before trying again?  Could help everybody figure out the  solution......

sorry to hear this. Well, I can't pinpoint what exactly happened. I had wifi connected as well as a USB cable from my printer to my router. I disconnected the USB cable.

Then I restarted my Mac, restarted the printer and tried to print a page and it worked in the normal way before this issue. Do hope it works for you too next time.

The 5.1 HP Update appeared yesterday on Software update - but it did not fix anything. This afternoon the HP 5.1 update appeared again after several checks for software upgrade (as I was reading the forums). This time around it fixed the issue, at least on my HP Laserjet 4200 (with trays, envelope feeder, stacker, stapler and duplexing).

The 5.1 file with drivers are from 2017 - so changes where made to the software so that the certification security no longer disables the drivers and alerts of malware.

An Apple 2nd level support mentioned to me that Apple used to provide the HP drivers in the iOS or for download through printer utility, and they have been transitioning so that the printer manufacturers are the ones who will supply them going forward.

Something in the transition went haywire. My concern is that HP needs motivation to support older printers. The Laserjets 4000 series (4000, 4050, 4100, 4200, 4250, 4300 & 4350) were sold from 1997 to 2005 and are workhorses - solidly built, high quality and fast. We still have many in our company. The incentive to HP should be they still sell the toners & drums.

Keep checking software update on your Mac - hopefully the newest 5.1 will be available to you that will fix the issues as it has for others.

Good to hear that there is good news out there via the updates. It just hasn't arrived at my computer.  I keep checking Software Updates, but my printer still doesn't respond, along with error warning message.  I've tried everything else, so all that is left is to wait.........  Could the issue be that I have a different HP printer than you?  I have the P2015dn.

Hi - Sorry you are still having issues. I have an HP4500 printer.

By coincidence HP support rang me as your email came in. I was on the phone to them for an hour last Friday and they were following up now that they have been made aware of the issue.

Anyway, they said your printer was very old and may not be supported any more with new drivers. My advice is that you contact your local HP support centre and ask their advice as my one (London) is excellent albeit that they had not been informed of the driver issue last Friday but are aware of it now.

Good Luck!

Stephen

PS Don't forget to reset the printing system before trying again https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c01371980

Hi,

I do not know where have you found those updated drivers. The HP software update 5.1 still bears the same date from 24 Oct 2017 and upon installation (expectedly) did not fix any issues with the printer (mine is Laserjet 476dw).

There are no updates offered through System Preferences>Software update for this issue.

Printing issues can be resolved with the workaround, but scanning is completely impossible.

i just printed in the usual way having reset printer settings. I didn't download any drivers etc.

I can only advise you to call HP as now they will almost certainly know which printer drivers have been fixed.

sorry - I'm just a layman. I have a HP 4500 printer which may be relevant.

Still doesn't work for me.  Still no help from HP or Apple.
