I am having the same issue.  My MASOS is Catalina 10-15-7 and my printer is an older HP Officejet.  I can remove the printer software, download  the new - per the HP website "fix", print a test page, scan a document but I cannot print any document.  My printer is a workhorse and I do not want a new one.  I downloaded the suggested fix but I cannot open the file.  I am getting desperate. Any ideas?

I was able to get my printer running again, but NOT from any help from HP.  I spent enough time on the phone explaining the issue with them.  All they could suggest was that "it would take time" for HP an Apple to work out their issues.  Their concept of "time" sounded like a long time or never.  I gave up on them.  What I did was to delete my printer in "System Preferences" and re-install the printer.  But instead of choosing the HP driver in the installationr, I chose the "Generic Postscript" driver that comes with the MACOS. and it worked!  My printer is completely functioning again. What a relief.  I am running the same version of Catalina as you are, so hopefully it will work for you also. Let me know if it works for you also.....

Thanks for letting me know and pleased it worked. My printer worked again with the same HP Driver I has a couple of days after I posted this.

Hi Planady,

I recieved your message but I am still struggling.  Where do I find the "Generic Postscript" driver?  Is it from the HP page with the EZ install or is it in the MAC?  I have spent so many hours trying to get this to work.

What you want exists in MACOS "System Preferences".  Here's the sequence of choices to guide you thru:

1.  Click on the Apple icon in upper left corner of MAC start page, then click on 'System Preferences'.

2.  In pop-up box, click on "Printers & Scanners".

3. Assuming that your printer is plugged into computer and turned on, you should see your printer name in  left side

box.  Right-click on "Reset Printing System".  This should delete your printer.  ( Just to be sure, you might want to

turn printer off, and disconnect the printer's USB connection to computer)

4. Now we want to install the printer again.  Re-connect the USB connection and turn printer on again.

5.  Click on Plus Symbol in lower left corner. If any malware alerts come up, just ignore them and click OK on that box.

That is just telling you that the HP drivers are not updated and therefore not certified by Apple.  (Our original problem!!)

6. The name of your printer should now appear in the "Add" box.  Click on the name of your printer.

7. Below, you will see:

NAME: (with you printer name to the right)

LOCATION: (with whatever you call your Hard Drive to the right)

USE: (with your printer name again)

8. Note the up-and-down arrows at far right of 'USE'. Click on the arrows.  A box will open that gives you a choice of drivers.

9. Click on "Generic Postscript Printer", then click "Add" at the bottom.

And that's it.  My printer came back to life after this.  If this does not work, maybe try the other choice which was something about a PCL printer?  I don't even know what that is. While I was going thru the steps and writing this to you, the "damage your computer" alert box( that the bad HP drivers are triggering) kept coming up repeatedly.  Just click OK every time to just get through the install process.  So, give it a go and let me know.......

Thanks. My issue fixed now with the original driver but hope this helps others!

Well thank you......  That's why I took the time to write it all out.  I remember the panic that I felt when my printer suddenly stopped and all the malware warnings came up.  Please note that I am "Level 1" now.....  I got a good laugh out of that !  Hacking the computer is not something I usually do, but now I am empowered !   :>)

Hi,

With a little help from AppleCare I was able to follow your instructions and find the "Generic Postscript" driver and I can print again.  Thanks a million times.  I had to call AppleCare as the drop down that gives the driver choices did not list the Generic Postscript.  The agent told me to disconnect from the printer as in desperation I had connected to it.  I am wireless usually.  Once I did that the drop down box showed the correct driver and Voila!! I am printing.  I have to tell you that I had called HP many times and on one of the calls actually got to the MAC department.  The agent there told me that I needed to order a new printer.  It is sitting on a snack table behind me.  It is not for sure the good quality of my old printer and tomorrow I am sending it back.  I may not ever order another HP printer as they were so difficult to work with. Thank heaven for this method of communication from the users.

I cannot thank you enough for these step-by-step instructions. It worked like a charm and I am so grateful. Although, it has not changed my option about HP. I will never purchase another printer from them. Their customer service is horrible. I was told by an HP rep that the only solution was to purchase a new printer. You saved my sanity and hundreds of dollars 🙂
