Hi @arejfour4, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
HP Smart does not necessarily need to run in the background for basic printing and scanning functions. However, it provides several benefits when it does:

What HP Smart Does in the Background

  1. Print & Scan Notifications – It alerts you when a print job is completed, if there's an issue (like low ink or paper jams), or when a scan is done.
  2. Ink & Paper Monitoring – It checks ink levels and paper status, especially useful for HP Instant Ink users.
  3. Cloud Services & Remote Printing – If you're using HP Smart Advance features, like printing from anywhere, it maintains connectivity.
  4. Firmware & Driver Updates – It automatically checks for and installs updates to keep your printer running smoothly.
  5. Sync with HP Account – If your printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink or connected to your HP account, it ensures real-time updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
