HP OfficeJet Pro 6978
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My all-in-one recently stopped being able to scan after a Windows Update, so I uninstalled the HP software and downloaded the HP software again from the website via the HP Easy Start software (version 6.5.3442.26).  Now, the scanner is working again.  However, if I try to scan via the Desktop HP utility program, I just get a dialog box that just offers to add another device to my computer (i.e., it tries to set up a connection between the computer and the all-in-one), rather than running the utility.  I'd really like to run the utility, so that I can change the default destination folder for scans.  Any suggestions?

Hello, @mikegalant – Greetings!

Thanks for reaching out! I’m here to help 🙂

I see that you are facing issues with the scan utility with your HP Officejet printer. It looks like a driver issue with the machine. Please try the steps listed below to try and fix the issue:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer, if present.
  • Go to Control Panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control Panel – Devices and Printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now, click http://hp.care/2pskZhm to download and install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
  • Restart the PC and check.

Let me know if that helps!

Good luck 🙂
