Why does the printer properties refer to tray 2 as a photo tray and not let it be anything else?

Sounds odd - this printer does not have a photo tray.

Cannot answer "why" - there is no good reason for the printer to claim that it has a photo tray.

It is possible that your printer believes there is photo paper in a tray - this is not the same thing, of course.

NOTE: Tray 2 supports only plain paper A4 or Letter-size and larger. Do not load paper while the printer is printing

Double check what the printer thinks...

EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)

Click Apply to save changes

So - if what you say is true, it is a very weird error.

You might be able to clear the problem by Restarting the Printer.
