Sounds odd - this printer does not have a photo tray.
Cannot answer "why" - there is no good reason for the printer to claim that it has a photo tray.
It is possible that your printer believes there is photo paper in a tray - this is not the same thing, of course.

NOTE: Tray 2 supports only plain paper A4 or Letter-size and larger. Do not load paper while the printer is printing
Double check what the printer thinks...
EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management
Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management
If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)
Click Apply to save changes

NOTE:
The following assumes the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software is installed
AND
(That) the printer is not exhibiting odd hardware errors (thinking it has a physical photo tray assembly)

So - if what you say is true, it is a very weird error.
You might be able to clear the problem by Restarting the Printer.
