Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Suddenly HPSmart opens for about five seconds, and then closes. based on this forum's recommendations, I have  tried to repair the app, that did not work, and also I uninstalled the app, rebooted, and redownloaded it from the Microsoft Store and reinstalled it but the issue persists. When downloading and reinstalling I was careful to turn off all antivirus functions. As far as i know the app is not blocked by antivirus.

I can print as before wirelessly with no problem

I cannot scan now and not sure how to regain functionality of this app.

This may have occurred after a recent Windows 10 cumulative update or maybe a Microsoft NET update, I don't know because I have not used the scan function for weeks.

Using wireless connection to my HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium

Something the app needs to fully load and connect seems to be missing.

Thanks

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

If you have not done so,

Consider the "Reset" in the HP Smart App.

Reset is different from "Repair".

Reset removes the app's data from within your user account.

There are additional suggestions included in the example.

Example - Windows - Reset HP Smart

Hello,

I tried all these steps with no luck. Application still opens for few seconds and then exits. I will certainly keep this detailed algorithm for future reference however.

I did find this in the Event Viewer and contents are identical each time I try to launch HPSmart. Does this provide a clue as to what is wrong?

That's too bad -- it appears that the "break" is not in your application user data.

Along with the other suggestions shown in the example plate, it's an "easy" fix when the steps work.

Yes, I might have missed something.

What about the app data?

There are two places where the application data is located -- the HP Smart > Reset can fix one of these.

When the Reset is not enough, the app should then be uninstalled and the system Restarted.

When the Restart and the Uninstall are not enough, it might mean there is something in Windows that is not being cleared during the removal (uninstall) OR perhaps there is corruption in the data space where the application is located when it is later reinstalled.

What else?

The older 8600 printer is marginally supported in terms of HP Smart being able to interact with it.

The printer's vintage does not answer the question about why the application cannot start in Windows when it is not yet attached to a printer.

Windows 10 is still supported - though the extent to which it is fully updated / managed / cared-for by Microsoft is something I cannot answer.

Were it mine to do,

Depending on how badly I wanted to solve the underlying cause of the problem,

I might complete one, some, or all of the following.

Like everything else, what you do depends on your skill set and what you are willing to do.

=====================================

NOTES

I do not use Fast Start -- it is always switched OFF on all my systems.

I try to remember to shut down (full stop) and restart the systems about once a week.

Personal Choice.

AND

All of the following depends on your network being healthy, your router being updated, functional, and not "as old as dirt".

=====================================

Start...

Reset the HP Smart app to remove the data from the user account

Uninstall the HP Smart app

Uninstall the full driver printer software from Programs and Features

Check - and if the printer is still in Devices and Printers > Remove all instances of the printer

If Windows 10 is still supported for Windows Updates, Check / Run Windows Updates

If Fast Start is "on" / enabled:

Switch Fast Start to OFF Shut down the system (full stop, not just "sleep") > Boot the computer - log in

OR

If Fast Start was already disabled:

Restart the system and log in

Next,

Reset the printer (standard unplug for 60 seconds while still on -- plug back in -- start / boot the printer)

Next,

Install HP Smart

If the app will at least start,

Install the Full Feature Software

Restart the computer and log in

Still not working?

Reload Windows -- this would depend on how long the OS has been lingering on the system.  Six months since last build?  Maybe not... A year since the last full loading of the OS?  Sure, I might reload the OS -- All the way back to the first version of Windows, Windows does love a Restart and it likes a clean file system.

Will any of this work?

Perhaps yes.

IF the issue is corruption in the File System, then you have a better chance of it working if you reload Windows.

What if you reload the OS - nice and shiny -  and it still doesn't work?

Doesn't seem likely but sure, could happen.

Start looking into your router and how well it is managing your network.

Switch off / on Fast Start

Fast Start uses a "saved configuration" to more quickly start your computer.

This is great until / if "something" is saved that should have been discarded during the boot sequence.

Switching off the option forces the computer to boot from the Windows Operating System and File System on the disk.

Windows 10

Settings   > System > Power and Sleep > Additional Power Settings

Choose what the power buttons do

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable

Remove Check (clear box) Turn on fast startup (recommended)

Save Changes

Windows 11 or Windows 10

Control Panel > icon view > Power Options

Choose what the power buttons do

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable

Remove Check (clear box) Turn on fast startup (recommended)

Save Changes

Next,

Close programs (for example, browsers, games, email) and close any open windows

Next,

Windows key + X + A (opens Cmd prompt as Admin)

Next,

When the command window opens, type / paste the following command and hit Enter:

shutdown /s /t 0

  • Wait for the computer to shut down completely (a few seconds)
  • Boot the computer > Log in > Wait around for a couple of minutes (yes, wait, do not rush)
  • Next time to shut down or Restart :  Windows key > Power

Optional

Switch ON the fast startup setting.

Dragon-Fur NOTE:

  • Business Notebooks > Fast Boot setup may be enabled / disabled in the BIOS

Shut down the workstation > Power on, immediately tap-tap-tap F10 to enter the BIOS >

Advanced > Boot Options >

Check / Uncheck Fast boot > Save and exit

OR

Elevated command prompt - run the following command:

REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power" /V HiberbootEnabled /T REG_dWORD /D 0 /F

Hi Dragonfur,

In looking further into things, I recalled that when printing one time, the document got  stuck in print cue from long ago and stopped functioning, so I just added another copy of the printer and it worked fine. But that stuck printer was not found on device manager, so later I could not find a way to delete it. But I also noted that at some point a new printer appeared that I did not install called scan only do not delete. When I checked that with the HP Scan and Print doctor, it said that the device was unregistered, and there was a registry error which it could not fix.

So as you suggested I uninstalled everything, HP smart, the drivers and also from the device app and rebooted and nothing was left. I also rebooted the printer. The HP Printer Doctor offered to download a full featured HP Printer assistant software, which I did and installed it after all the deletions. It is not as nice an interface, but has the same functionality as HPSmart, and now I can print and scan, see my ink levels etc.

Also of interest is that while HPSmart would load and close, if I tried to print from Word, HP Smart was offered as a "printer" and it would open, I would press Print, and it would search for printers and say none were installed, this despite I could alternatively select the HP8600 on the list.

At this point I can only hope that Windows store does not redownload and reinstall HPSmart. Maybe I could try reinstalling again, but its not worth it.

Thanks so much for your help, and I will save the info in case I need it in the future

The "copy" of the driver for the HP Scan is not related to HP Smart.  "Copy" driver queue can be added as a result of the HP Print and Scan doctor having been run sometime in the past.  Sure, and the queue says, "Do not delete".  Those few words have resulted in far more consternation of the part of users than was ever likely intended.  It's just a driver queue - it can be deleted when the printer software is deleted, it can be deleted / removed when it is not working, not wanted, if it is just annoying.  If the queue is not serving any purpose, Right-Click on it and remove it.

The full feature software - working or not - is not related to the HP Smart application except perhaps being helpful in providing access to the Printing Preferences / Shortcuts as accessed in "More Settings" (within HP Smart).

Yes, The Print and Scan doctor can install software on a willing, and clean system on which all the printer software has been neatly removed.  The odd wording in that sentence is deliberate -- I don't use the "Doctor" anymore so I don't have current experience with what it will do or will not do.

HP Smart - the Windows application -- does not support printing Word documents.

Perhaps the queue you opened is "HP Smart Printing"?

Different animal.

HP Smart Printing might be installed with HP Smart (it is not part of the standard full driver printer software).

HP Smart Printing can interface with Word.

Doesn't matter since it does not work -- example provided FYI only

Dragonfur,

Thanks for the info about alternative scanning programs as another solution to HPSmart not working.

I might add that I am happy to be back with the HP Printer Assistant which I used before on my older computer. After installing it seamlessly found my printer on the wireless connection. One annoyance about HPSmart was that every time I wanted to scan something if it had been awhile, I had to log into my HP Account. My should HP require me to log into an online account to scan? Anyway HP Printer Assistant allows me to just scan, no logins required.
