Hi, I am wondering if I might have gotten hacked? I got a pop up dialog box on my computer randomly asking if I'd allow HP Smart to make changes to my computer/settings. I wasn't aware of any software updates recently that might have been related to this alert/request but I clicked yes anyway thinking it was legit, although suspicious. Afterwards I noticed I wasn't able to connect to my printer anymore, every time I tried to print it would say the printer was offline even though it said it was online in HP smart. I received the same dialog box on my laptop with HP Smart installed but clicked no to giving it access/permission and I was able to print normally from my laptop. Was that dialog box some kind of phishing/hacking attempt that I unwittingly said yes to? Does anyone know if that was a legit request? Was there a recent update to HP Smart for windows?
Thanks in advance! Now trying to reformat and it's causing me a huge headache.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
Based on what I've seen, the update is OK -- legitimate.
The application does update on occasion (kept Updated by the Microsoft Store ) - and yes, it should do so smoothly so when you next open the application it works as expected.
At this writing:
HP Smart - Windows - Latest version = 142.3.139.0
On my system, HP Smart app (also Windows 11) updated yesterday.
Check the Microsoft Store
Click open your Library (lower left corner)
Click on the app in the list to open the information page on it.
The application version can also be checked in the app -- of course, it does need to be able to open.
The application version can be checked in
Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > find HP Smart > Menu (three horizontal dots) > Advanced Options
If you've not trashed your system yet,
Try the following ...
=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+
HP Smart - Windows
Consider
Check / Run Windows Updates > Install any pending updates
Next - If not yet done:
Restart everything, including the router that controls your network.
Next,
Open and Check HP Smart
If the HP Smart opens but does not work or hangs partly open > Close the HP Smart App.
If you cannot stop HP Smart, Restart the computer and log in > Do not restart HP Smart yet.
No Joy?
Reset HP Smart Application - Windows
Next,
Reset the HP Smart application - This action removes the app data.
Windows 10 -
Settings > Apps > Apps and Features
Windows 11 -
Settings > Apps > Installed Apps
Search and Find HP Smart in the apps list
Open Advanced options > Reset the app
Restart the computer and log in
Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)
HP_Smart_Win_Apps-and-Features_ Reset_4
If the app Reset does not work by itself,
Next,
Uninstall the HP Smart App from Settings > Apps > Apps and Features / Installed Apps
Restart the computer and log in
“Get” a new copy of the HP Smart application from the Microsoft Store
Open HP Smart > Sign in > Add Printer(s)
