I have an HP Laserjet 1018 which is normally not Mac osx compatible. I am able to use with my Macbook with the driver for the HP 1022 and it works very well except when I try to print images. They look like what I think are called ‘halftone images’. I can see the dots when looking through a not-very-strong magnifying glass.
Before I go out and try to find another printer, I just want to confirm if there is another way to fix this or if it is indeed a driver issue that is unfixable. I know that others use the 1022 driver for the 1018 and haven’t heard this complaint.
I’ve tested just about every printer quality setting that I can find and printed from the Preview app as well as from Photoshop.
Thanks for any help and suggestions!

@smeelah, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
Yes, this printer is not compatible with macOS. The driver could be the reason for this issue. Without the proper driver, the printer would not work as it should.
You may perform the steps mentioned in this document - Fixing Poor Print Quality
This printer is not AirPrint compatible too.
However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.
NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you Kumar,
It's funny. I have been using an old Laserjet 6L for years with a cheap port adapter. Also, not Mac compatible but in that case there was a Gutenprint driver option. The images print very well. There is not a Gutenprint driver for the 1018 some reason and I heard that there is a repeated firmware install requirement which would need to be manual on a Mac.
Anyway, just hoped that I might have missed something. At least the 1018 is still doing a crisp text with the 1022 driver:)
