I had a problem with my printer and had to get it exchanged for a new one as it was under guarantee. I have had the printer renewed Thank you.

I was advised that the fault with the printer was a virus that caused the printer software to malfunction. To stop any further malfunctions I was advised to install some protective software.  The cost was £179.99 for a year which in the heat of the moment I agreed to have it installed. It was duley installed. I was informed by the operator Harry when it was done. I then changed my printer and it is all set up and running.

I was surprised to see that if I had brought it online it would have cost me £29.99 for a year so why have I paid £179.99 for the same thing?

Please could you advise me of why I have been charged so much?  Or is it a scam by one of your agents.

Regards

I am sorry that happened to you.

HP Support does not post phone numbers on the Internet.

Neither does HP Support pry into your computer and take a walk-about in your data.

It sounds like you've been scammed -- it was not by HP.

Scams of this type are VERY common.

Your computer is not full of bugs -- it was never full of bugs, in fact.

Regardless, HP does not care whether you have bugs in your computer -- certainly not in the context of selling you "protective" software you do not need or want to solve a printer driver issue.   No legitimate company does this.

The problem with "heat of the moment" is that when you are already on the hook with a scammer, it is easier for them to convince you to not think and just do what they want.

Next time you have a problem, expect that you will be notified by the thieves that you need an "update" -- the update will cost you more money.  Every time they contact you and you agree, it will cost you more.

What?

You perhaps now have monitoring software on your system that will alert the scammers when it's a good time to try and sell you more services, scare you a bit more, and take advantage of you.

You can (should) certainly report the incident to your bank.

Beware of Fake Sites

The "Real Deal"

123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site

https://123.hp.com/

Watch out for every dot and letter.

The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.

There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.

If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to sell you software, threatens you, or wants access to your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I will get on to my bank in the morning and see if they can stop the payment. I have also deleted the software from the computer. Fingers crossed but it was so well-organised and sounded so real. All I got was a new printer out of it that cost a lot of money.

That's Life sorry to say

Regardas
