Hello, I recently purchased new laptop w/windows 11 & having trouble hooking up to HP Laserjet P1006.  I downloaded the driver from HP website, but it gets stuck on the installing part, keeps saying device is connected, waiting for PNP to finish installing driver, but the status bar is never ending, it's been almost an hour so something is wrong.  Please advise how to fix.  Thank you

Hi @Palcopy, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your new laptop and printer. Let's try a few steps to resolve this issue:

Power Drain:

  • Turn off your printer and disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Remove the USB cable, if connected.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, then press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds.
  • Plug the power cable back into the wall outlet and the printer, then turn on the printer.

Windows 11 Compatibility
HP LaserJet P1006 Printer is not compatible with Windows 11.

Manual Driver Installation:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a Printer.
  • Select The printer I want isn’t listed.
  • Choose Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
  • Select Use an existing port and choose the correct port.
  • Click on Have Disk and navigate to the folder where the driver was downloaded.

Use Windows Built-in Class Driver

Windows 11 includes a universal class driver for older HP printers:

  1. Open Control PanelDevices and Printers.
  2. Click Add a Printer.
  3. Select The printer that I want isn’t listed.
  4. Choose Add a local printer with manual settings.
  5. Select USB001 (Virtual Printer Port for USB).
  6. Select HPHP LaserJet P1005/P1006/P1500 series (Class Driver).
  7. Click Next and complete the installation.

Install via Windows Update

  1. Open SettingsWindows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. Look for Optional Updates → Install any HP printer driver updates.

Use HP Universal Print Driver (UPD)

HP’s Universal Print Driver (UPD) might work as an alternative:

  1. Download the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows:
    HP Universal Print Driver (PCL6)
  2. Install it and follow on-screen instructions.
  3. Select USB (Direct Print) if prompted.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. This tool can help diagnose and fix common issues with HP printers.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
