How can i print directly to this printer without using HP Smart Printing? The reason i want to print to the device by its model number is because my family members may not want to install that software.
On my Windows 11 computer (a new HP Envy laptop), i want to be able to print a file by selecting my new HP Envy 7200e printer. I set the printer up when i got the printer 2 days ago and successfully printed 2 pages. I then turned off the printer because i don't use it much. Today, i turned it back on to print some tax forms. Nothing printed because Windows was showing the printer as offline. The printer was powered on, the blue network light was lit and the computer had an IP address on my home network. I cycled power a couple of times, checked the paper tray. Nothing worked. Finally, i noticed that in addition to the printer, i also had something called HP Smart Printing available to use and that works just fine for my laptop.

Hi @david781,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
You may print using the wi-fi direct option. Wi-fi direct option does not require internet.
Please follow the steps from this document to connect using the wi-fi direct option.
Let me know if this works.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rainbow, thanks for taking the time. But the process did not work; i received a message telling me to try adding the device again or to check with the manufacturer. I see my device in the list of printers and scanners listed as HPD483CA (HP ENVY Inspire 7200 series) Status unavailable. I have tried the steps below multiple times and have cycled power on the printer at least twice.
Here's what i did on my Windows 11 laptop:
- Retrieved device name and password from the small screen on the printer
- Open Printers & scanners
- Click Add device, wait until i see prompt Show Wi-Fi Direct printers, click the Show Wi-Fi Direct link
- Click Add device when i see my printer name (DIRECT-CA-HP ENVY Inspire 7200)
- Enter password and click Next
- Get error pop-up below
- Click close and watch/wait while the printer tries to connect. But it eventually fails or times out telling me status is unavailable. I can't see any way to delete that printer either.
If i cycle power on the printer, i get another opportunity to enter the printer's password. I've tried this process with my laptop 5 feet from the printer and both are within 30 feet (no walls) of my wireless router.

Thanks Rainbow! I appreciate your time.
I don't know if you're affiliated w/ HP in any way, but if so, i continue to be impressed by the quality of HP products. That said, if i wrote a review for the 7200e printer, it would be entitled "Printing made complex". It is so much easier to simply let the OS find the printer (yeah i know it might require a 2nd click to get the OS to look on the local network for a device identifying as a printer), then install a driver if needed (though that search is easily be handled by the OS if there's internet connectivity) and print a test page. Instead, i needed to install several app's, struggle to figure out why my printer was showing offline, learn about the special HP printing app, then run into this problem. My goodness...
Anyway, thanks again for your help. I'm wishing you a good day!
