Hi @neale-1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

For printers like the HP Envy Pro 6542, which don't have an onboard screen, you typically need to use software settings to adjust features like the cartridge policy. Here's how you can adjust the settings using your computer:

Steps to Turn Off Cartridge Policy

  1. Install HP Smart App:
    • If you haven't already, download and install the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device. It's available from the Microsoft Store, Mac App Store, Google Play, or Apple App Store.

  2. Connect to Your Printer:
    • Open the HP Smart app and ensure your HP Envy Pro 6542 is connected.
    • If the printer is not added, select "Add Printer" and follow the on-screen instructions to connect it.

  3. Access Settings:
    • In the HP Smart app, locate your printer from the list of devices.
    • Look for a section labelled "Printer Settings" or "Advanced Settings."

  4. Cartridge Policy:
    • Within the settings menu (often found under "Advanced" or "Printer Maintenance"), look for options related to the cartridge policy or cartridge protection.
    • Change the settings to turn off any cartridge protection or policy that might restrict cartridge use.

Additional Tips

  • If these options are not visible in the HP Smart app, you might need to access more advanced printer settings via the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS). Here's how:
    • Accessing Embedded Web Server:
      • Make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
      • Find your printer's IP address: You can usually print a network configuration page by pressing the Wireless button on the printer.
      • Enter the printer's IP address in a web browser to access the Embedded Web Server.
      • Navigate to the "Settings" or "Configuration" section and look for cartridge options to adjust or disable protections.
  • Firmware Updates: Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date, as HP regularly updates firmware, which can change or update available features.

Note: Turning off cartridge protection might affect your warranty terms or ink subscription services like HP Instant Ink if you are a subscriber. Proceed with any change, understanding these potential implications.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
