Hi @Bickfordjm,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To access and load paper in Tray 1 (also known as the multipurpose tray) of your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301sdw, follow these steps:
Accessing Tray 1:
- Locate Tray 1: Tray 1 is usually found on the front of the printer. It's a fold-out tray designed for manual feed of special media or different paper sizes.
- Open Tray 1: Pull down the tray gently. It should fold outwards from the front of the printer.
Loading Paper in Tray 1:
- Adjust the Paper Guides: Before loading the paper, adjust the paper width guides to match the size of the paper you are using.
- Load the Paper:
- Insert the stack of paper into the tray with the print side facing up.
- Make sure the paper is aligned properly and is not bent or folded.
- The paper should not exceed the fill line marked on the tray.
- Adjust the Paper Guides Again: Slide the paper width guides inward so that they rest gently against the edges of the paper stack. This ensures the paper is properly aligned and will feed correctly.
Capacity of Tray 1:
- Tray 1 can hold up to 100 sheets of 75 g/m² (20 lb bond) paper.
- For heavier paper or special media, the capacity might be less.
Steps to Clear "No Paper in Tray 1" Message:
- Check Paper Placement: Ensure that the paper is properly aligned and that the paper guides are set correctly.
- Ensure the Paper is Loaded Correctly: The paper should be pushed in as far as it will go, and the tray should be fully extended and properly aligned.
- Check Paper Sensors: Sometimes, a small piece of paper or debris can block the paper sensors. Make sure the tray and sensors are clean.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
