Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11

I have a new Windows 11 laptop.  I am unable to connect my HP Deskjet 940c printer to my laptop.  I am unable to download drivers from the HP support.  It doesn't recognize my printer's serial number.

Thanks for sharing the details. The HP DeskJet 940c is a legacy printer, and while it doesn't have Full drivers for Windows 11, you can still get it working using Windows built-in drivers or compatibility driver mode from the HP site.

Option 1: Use Windows Built-in Driver

Windows 11 includes a basic driver for many older HP printers, including the DeskJet 940c.

Steps:

  1. Connect the printer via USB to your laptop.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Click Add device and wait for Windows to detect the printer.
  4. If it doesn’t appear, click “The printer that I want isn’t listed”.
  5. Choose “Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings”.
  6. Select Use an existing port (usually USB001).
  7. Under Manufacturer, choose HP.
  8. Under Printers, scroll to HP DeskJet 940c (or similar).
  9. Complete the installation.


Option 2: Download the Legacy Driver from HP

HP still hosts the last available driver (for Windows XP/2000), which can sometimes be installed in compatibility mode.

To install in compatibility mode:

  1. Download the driver .exe file.
  2. Right-click the file > Properties > Compatibility tab.
  3. Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select Windows XP.
  4. Run the installer.

⚠️ This method may not always work on Windows 11, but it's worth trying if the built-in driver fails.
