I am trying to connect a printer I was given (second hand) to my laptop. I do not have the usb cable nor the installation disk and am struggling to find out how to get the device software required. Any help would be greatly appriciated this has taken up most of my day already

Hi,
First, connect the printer to your wireless network by pressing the Setup button on the printer.
Press the Down button till Network is shown and then press OK.
Press the Down button till Wireless Setup Wizard is shown and then press OK.
Follow the steps on screen to select your wireless network and type its password using the keypad.
Note: as an older printer model it only supports WEP or WPA wireless security, if your router may use WPA2 (which is the most common security protocol today) it may fail to connect, so your router needs to be configured for WPA security to connect the printer.
Once the printer is connected to your wireless network download and install below software for your printer:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL30951/mp-76831-1/AIO_CDB_Net_Full_Win_WW_130_141.exe
