HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw

I have had recurring printing jams with my HP Laser mfp179fmw. The jams occur just before the red rubber roller outlet. I had a particularly nasty paper jam on the weekend as my son mistakenly thought that if he kept sending items to the printer, then eventually it would "push the jam through" . Obviously, this was a big fail and although all paper has been cleared now, the roller refuses to accept the paper. i'm not sure of the function of this roller, could it be a fuser? All i know is that it wont't accept paper and HP Support suggest I do a factory reset as a last resort to fix the issue before I get another printer. I haven't been able to use EWS to try and do it as my printer doesn't appear to have a sticker with a PIN on, Have tried HP Smart app but this just takes me to EWS page , which before today I never knew existed! Is there a workaround to do it within a PIN?

Hi @NikkiC69,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're dealing with both mechanical issues (potentially with the fuser or exit roller) and access limitations for resetting your HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw. Here’s a step-by-step guide to address your concerns.

Factory Reset without EWS or PIN

If you cannot access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) due to the missing PIN, you can perform a factory reset directly from the printer's control panel:

Steps:

Turn off the Printer:

  • Power off your printer completely.

Enter Service Mode:

  • While the printer is off, press and hold the Stop button (red X) and the Right Arrow button on the control panel.
  • While holding these buttons, power on the printer.
  • Continue holding the buttons until the display shows Service Mode or similar.

Perform the Reset:

  • Use the arrow keys to navigate to Reset Menu.
  • Select Factory Reset or All Settings Reset.
  • Confirm the reset when prompted.

Restart the Printer:

  • Once the reset is complete, turn off the printer and turn it back on.

Check the Fuser or Exit Roller

The red rubber roller you described is likely part of the fuser assembly, which heats and bonds toner to the paper. If paper isn't being fed correctly, it might be:

  • Misaligned rollers
  • Paper debris or adhesive residue from jams
  • A damaged fuser component

Steps to Check/Service the Roller:

Turn Off and Cool Down:

  • Power off the printer and wait at least 30 minutes to ensure the fuser cools down (it can get very hot).

Inspect the Roller:

  • Open the rear access panel (or the path to the exit rollers/fuser).
  • Use a flashlight to inspect for any remaining debris, torn paper, or foreign objects.

Clean the Roller:

  • If there's residue, gently clean the roller with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of isopropyl alcohol.
  • Avoid applying too much pressure, as the roller is delicate.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
