How do I keep my Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw Printer logged in as admin, or any user? It’s just myself in my office and I have to enter the password on the panel every time I scan something. The timeout max is 300 seconds, but I scan a lot throughout the day, often more than 300 seconds apart. Is there any way to keep it logged in? I found an HP article saying you would have to “follow a procedure” to do so, but it never said what that was. Any help would be appreciated, as I am going to have to return this printer if it’s not possible.

Hi @Florida_Path,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding printer's logout time!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It sounds frustrating to keep logging in repeatedly throughout the day. While HP printers have a security timeout to prevent unauthorized access, you may be able to disable or extend it further than 300 seconds. Here's how to try and keep your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw logged in as admin longer:
1. Increase or Disable Auto Logout
- Open the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Find your printer’s IP address (on the printer's touchscreen: Settings → Network → View IP address).
- Enter the IP address in a web browser (Chrome, Edge, etc.).
- Go to the Security or Management section.
- Look for a setting like "Auto Logout" or "Session Timeout" and try extending it. Some HP printers allow a longer duration than 300 seconds via the web interface.
2. Enable a Permanent Admin Login
Some HP models allow you to stay logged in as admin using Persistent Login or Single Sign-On settings:
- In the EWS Web Interface, go to Security → Access Control.
- Look for an option like “Always Stay Logged In” or “Remember Admin Login”.
- Save the changes.
3. Use PIN Authentication Instead of Full Password
- If the printer forces you to enter the full admin password every time, check if you can set up a 4-6 digit PIN instead for quicker access.
- This is usually found under Security Settings in the EWS.
4. Disable or Change Sleep Mode Behavior
- If the printer logs out due to inactivity, changing the Sleep Mode settings might help.
- Go to Settings → Energy Settings and try increasing or disabling auto-sleep.
Let me know if you need help navigating the EWS settings! 😊

Hi, HP reply is to broad, I have spent time today and cant seem to find a place to have the printer logged in as admin. Can you please provide a specific solution for the following printer: HP color laserjet pro mfp 4302 fdw. Dont reply generic with look for a, b, or c. Give us an exact answer. And if it is not doable., then say so and I suggest that the next version of the software we can update the printer with includes it. OK? 🙂 cheers,

Hi @John345676789,
The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw has a default session timeout setting of 300 seconds (5 minutes), which can be inconvenient if you frequently use the device throughout the day. Here's what you can do to try to keep the printer logged in as an admin or user for a longer period of time:
Adjust Timeout Settings
Access the Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Find the printer's IP address on the control panel by navigating to the network settings.
- Enter the IP address in a web browser to access the EWS.
Log in to the EWS:
- Use your administrator credentials to log in.
Navigate to Security Settings:
- Look for settings related to security or session timeout.
Adjust the Timeout:
- If the option is available, extend the session timeout beyond the default 300 seconds.
Alternate Methods
Stay Engaged with the Printer: Regularly interact with the printer by using the touchscreen or other features to keep the session active, avoiding inactivity time-out.
Unfortunately, the ability to indefinitely keep the printer logged in depends on the firmware and security policies set by HP. It's worth noting that certain configurations might be limited to ensure security compliance and prevent unauthorized access to the printer network.
I hope this helps.
