How can I get my HP 2655 scanner to work after Windows 11 installed?

Hi @BL2026,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating this feels. When your HP DeskJet 2655 All‑in‑One had a scanner that worked smoothly before you’d hear that gentle whir as the scan bar glided under the glass. Suddenly, after Windows 11 was installed, the scanner refuses to respond. Windows 11 updates sometimes remove or replace the HP scanning driver, leaving the printer able to print but not scan. Please know. Your scanner is still healthy; we just need to restore the software connection. Let’s walk through this together.

STEP 1: Remove the old Windows 11 driver (Windows replaced it with a generic one)

  1. Press Windows Key + R
  2. Type:
  3. control printers
  4. Right‑click HP DeskJet 2600 series
  5. Select Remove Device
  6. Confirm removal

This clears the broken or generic “WIA” driver that Windows 11 installed.

STEP 2: Install the FULL HP Driver (not the basic one)

Windows 11 often replaces HP’s full driver with a basic “class driver” that cannot scan.

Download the full HP driver package here:

Install the package and restart your PC.

After installation, HP Smart should recognize both:

  • Printer
  • Scanner

If not, continue.

STEP 3: Reinstall HP Smart correctly (this fixes 80% of Windows 11 scanning issues)

  1. Open Microsoft Store
  2. Search HP Smart
  3. Uninstall it
  4. Restart computer
  5. Reinstall HP Smart
  6. Add your HP DeskJet 2655 again

Try scanning from HP Smart → Scan & Shortcuts

If HP Smart says “Scanner Unavailable,” continue.

STEP 4: Start the HP Scan Service manually

  1. Press Windows Key + R
  2. Type:
  3. services.msc
  4. Find:
    Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
  5. Right‑click → Restart
  6. Set "Startup Type" to Automatic

Try scanning again.

If the WIA service was off, the scanner will wake up as soon as it turns back on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
