Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

You will find the version of the software on this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8600-plus-e-all-in-one-printer-ser...

Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which helps in resolving common printing and scanning problems such as missing or corrupt print drivers, connectivity issues etc.

Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93

Let me know if this helps.

If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Thanks for the links
But I already know what HP wants to give me as a version. I need to know what version I have on my system / HP 8600 Plus

Also used scan & print dr and no issues aside from not having the latest

Mainly interested see release notes and dates to see if my recent upgrade ba what is offered is worth the time and reconfigure of the device

Thanks

The version that you've installed is the version mentioned on the driver link itself. As such, there is no way to find out which version you've installed.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Since the question was -

what is the way to tell the currently installed version of the HP printer software?

And your answer was -

"there is no way to find out which version you've installed."

The information was not helpful and seek you to advise HP print driver engineers to release the mechanism they use to advise the user "your software is not up to date and the new version is x.y.z" to the user, revealing where they find that info on the user's system and make it available to the consumer via some utility or enquiry.  It would also be useful to know what changes are in each version (release notes) to make it easier to determine if the update is valuable for immediate need or could be installed at a later time.
While they are at it, they could make it easier to retain all the user's settings when updating the software.  A recent re-install has left us with having to spend an extraordinary amount of time in trying to reestablish these user settings.
