Old but reliable Laserjet Pro colour multifuntion CM1415fnw. Printer says 2 toners are "very low". And the printer's own web page agrees. But the operating system's status (Mac High Sierra) shows both nearly full. I am inclined to believe the printer.
I have discovered that there is newer firmware (20120629 date code) for my printer, but there does not seem to be any way to download and install it, at least from Mac OS. Many HP printers apparently can connect directly over the internet to install firmware, but this one does not seem to offer that option. I have gone through the service menus carefully.

Thanks for replying.
I had already found this article, and did my best to find a firmware update option anywhere in the printer menus or on the HP web site.
There is a web services menu including ePrint, but it has no update options. I also thoroughly explored the setup menus (gear icon) and I could not find any way to do a firmware update from the printer.
On the HP web site, the software and drivers page for this printer has no downloads of any kind, for any version of Windows or Mac OS. It refers to the product page for the printer, which in turn has a link back to the page I was just at.
Google search results reveal instructions from 2012 or so for updating firmware from then-current versions of Windows, but the updater exe files are no longer available.

My previous reply seems to have vanished.
I have downloaded the .exe file using your link. 3 questions:
1. Does it work in Windows 10? The documentation for the updater mentions only up to Windows 8.
2. If if works in Windows 10, will it work in Windows 10 running in a virtual machine under Mac OS 10.13? Since the printer connection is over the network, it should work, but it would be helpful to know if others have tried something similar.
3. The instructions say that: The RFU setting on the Control Panel (Service -> RFU) must be set to "ON" but I can't find a Service menu on the printer. There is no RFU setting option in any menu I can find. Just possibly, if I can access the Service menu I might also be able to update the firmware right from the printer, bypassing any OS compatibility issues.

Hi @Al_from_Ottawa,
Thank you for keeping me posted.
Yes, it will work in Windows 10 as well.
Follow the below steps to update the firmware from the printer front panel.
-
Navigate to the printer update feature. Menu names and icons vary by printer.
-
Printers with an ePrint button or icon: Touch or press the HP ePrint icon or button (
or
), touch or press Settings or Setup if necessary, then touch or press Product Update or Check Product Updates.
-
Printers with text-based menus: Select the Setup, Service, or Settings menu, select Preferences, Printer Maintenance, or Tools if necessary, then select Web Services, Printer Update, or LaserJet Update.
-
-
If you are prompted to sign up or accept terms of service, follow any on-screen instructions to enable Web Services and setup automatic updates. This procedure sets up the printer's Internet connection so it can receive updates.
-
If the printer does not automatically start the update process, select Check for Updates or a similar menu to start the update.
Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the info on Windows 10.
I have already read the instructions for updating from the printer, and have tried to do it.
As I have already said several times, the standard advice for how to do an update from the printer DOES NOT WORK for this printer. I have gone through every menu. There is no Service menu. The Settings menu and Web Services menu both exist but neither has an option for updates.
Web Services is a separate menu and also an option inside Settings. I can turn web services on or off, and turn eprint and apps on or off. But nothing anything like an update.
There is a long System Settings menu, with things like Print Quality and Power Save Time, but again nothing about updates.
I am hoping that there is a hidden Service menu that can be accessed by some special procedure, perhaps by pressing and holding some location on the touch screen when the printer is powered off and on, or by pressing some strange sequence or combination of places on the touch screen. Otherwise I know of no way to ensure that remote update is enabled.
